Blown iphone....

Dear all,

I'm an happy owner of a 2011 e92 320i and want to share something with you.

I have an iphone 3s as second phone and it is placed in the middle console on an adapter. I use this phone only when I forget my primary phone, a samsung s2. It is always been set to flightmode. The phones are connected with bluetooth to the idrive professional.

Last week I forgot to set the phone to flightmode, however it was shut off and still under charge by the adapter. On my way to work I noticed a problem, the iphone was completely bursted by the battery that had become some balloon.

Perhaps the contineously charge on the battery it bursted the iphone.

Has anyone seen this before?

Flight mode is irrelevant. A bulging lithium-ion battery is from overheating and/or overcharging. Do a web search for "iphone 3GS bulging battery" for lots of discussion on it. I'm not sure there's anything you could have done to prevent this, it may have been a matter of the age of the battery as well if it was a 3G or 3GS. The phone SHOULD have managed the charging to prevent this from happening.

i think such little usage and leaving the iphone connected to the charger all the time is to blame

discharge slightly... recharge... discharge a little.. recharge.. over and over = overcharge = blown Li-Ion

original apple battery? or an aftermarket replacement?

the iphone's internal charging circuit would be the weak point here. the car only provides 5V power, its up to the phone to control the charging

Known problem with the older iphones, it's not your car that caused it.

Completely the phone's fault. All Li-Ion devices have some pretty sophisticated charging circuitry. All of that is to prevent the battery from falling too low in charge (which completely breaks the battery and it will never work again) and avoiding overcharging which will cause it to blow up.

Leaving it plugged in all the time likely caused the actual overcharging, but if you had unplugged it, it would have only masked the actual charging issues with the phone. So not your fault on this one, blame Apple!

Maybe apple will give you a new phone? this is common in li-ion batteries and if you leave it in the car during the summer heat, it will get worse, fast. Heat is the major contributor.

first off you cannot replace the battery in any Iphone, you have to take it to the Apple store or your cell phone provider, If you have an Apple store near by, take the phone to them, I bet they would give you a new phone for free.

its worth a try

Respectfully, while this is what Apple would have you believe, it is not true.

+1 apple wants you to pay them, but it isn't that hard to do yourself.
