M5 aerodynamics package-why do m-bumpers look so good
I was thinking to myself today. I wonder if I like the m-bumpers because they are on a fast car or they just naturally look good? In a different world where everyone had m-bumpers execept for the m5 would we all be swapping our m-bumpers for regular bumpers? The ///m symbol is the most successful marketing tool bmw ever did. As soon as someone sees the //m logos on my car they tell me how fast my car is.
People on the forums freak out if someone puts an ///m on their 540i, but in Canada and AUS have 540i///m has OEM so what's the big deal? I know I am rambling but I'm looking for people's opinions on this subject. |

If it was the other way around, I still don't think everyone would be swapping to the 'normal' bumpers. The M or Sport bumpers look good naturally and had they been standard fitment on ALL E39's I doubt very much there'd be as much 'interest' in getting the standard ones. People freak out because they like to follow what BMW officially put on their cars. In the UK, only the M5 E39 model had an M badge from factory on the trunk/bootlid, so on 'any' other E39, it gets frowned upon. In the USA, I believe the 2003 model year 540i M sport got the 'M' badge on the trunklid, and I 'think' it might be the same in a few other territories. Although some 'Sport' designated or 'optioned' cars got the little M badges on the door strips, wheels, steering wheel etc - some owners who don't quite know will then put M badges on the trunklid and/or front grille etc and thus, making the 'big deal' ! The way i see it for the E39, the pre lci bumper it was a big flop...it's butt ugly. The lci bumper shows a state of elegance and classy feel, while the m bumper is more sport oriented, hence why it's on the m5.
I've seen this other world you speak of once (sadly) and it doesn't look good IMO, the post lci bumper doesn't flow overall with the m5 at all. Some people do prefer the post lci bumper. I do agree though that M is now just a Marketing tool. "Hey, want some M performance parts for your M5!?"

Honestly before i bought my M tech i think i wanted it because of the M5. But now that its on i think it matches the mar 100x better than the non M bumper. after my bumper conversion i cant stop looking at my car. i also got the M5 rims those on the other hand maybe because they are on the M5, because i could have bought 19in BBS LMs for less than 1/2 the price of style 65s.
