85 635csi idle issues, please help!

Hi I'm new to this forum so I hope I'm posting this in the right place. But I have a 1985 635csi and I've done quite a bit of work on it and it's been running great. But all of the sudden when I come to a stop it idles really rough. It used to idle right around 750 rpms, but now it fluctuates between 500 and 550 rpms and seems like its threatening to die. Any answers out there? And also the speedometer and gas gauge dont work either, any troubleshooting suggestions for that?

Several possibles. ICV is dirty or going to die. Hoses (big and small) going to inlet manifold cracked. It sounds like an inlet side problem rater than electrical. Speedo etc could be SI batteries. When they go it brings on all sorts of weird faults.

Had similar idle issues on my 87 L6; cleaned the idle control valve with carb cleaner, and all was well. Be sure the hoses are in good shape and connections are secure.

Ok thanks! I'll try cleaning it ASAP. Is there a how-to guide to cleaning the ICV anywhere?

I am not aware of a guide..I simply removed the hoses and cleaned all moving parts.

idle question

My mechanic said not to worry about it on mine: six months later, no problems, and now I kind a dig it, like it's ready to go even when it's standing still. Altogether, why not say it, the Shark is the collest Bimmer.

HEY GUYS.... Dont forget about the Intake Manifold gaskets, they will fail on the ends and you wont see much but they do fall apart and your Idle will go from semi smooth to rocking the E24 on its wheels with a massive idle problem!! It is worth checking especially the Intake Manifold gasket on the # 1 cylinder!!
