89 735iL Transmission problem

i have a 1989 e32 735il, I recently had tranny out to check seal. all the fluid was drained out the car has not been run for at least 5 years i recently bought it from my buddy. I put the tranny back in and put 3.5 quarts of fluid in and its still not up to the full mark. also the tranny does not want to come out of first gear, the shifter will move it to each gear but it will not shift outta first. any help or ideas would be great. I do have the car on jack stands running it, not sure if that matters.

Thanks

transmission problem on 7 series

I have found a way to force BMW of North America take your car back for a full refund.
Let me know if you are interested in pursuing this option please.
I will put you in touch with the right people, who did it for me.

Total capacity if the torque converter is drained is 7.5 liters. Your shift problem may be low fluid related.

Thanks, before i posted my problem i put the 3.4 quarts in and it still wasnt in the safe range and sounded like it wanted to shift into different gears. i will add more fluid and give it a try. i wasnt sure how much to put in after the recommended amount and didnt want to get carried away. the car did sit for bout 5 years before i bought it from my buddy.

Thanks again
