So based off all the articles my options for Ipod in my 04 545 are the Aux input or a interface module for $$$$$ which can be controlled through factory radio. Also the Iphone would only work with the module interface depending on what i got. If I was lucky, I may have Bluetooth and Iphone capability already depending on my build date. Just checking to make sure I have my info correct.

I bought an integrated aftermarket 'Y' cable and can control an iPod through the radio and steering wheel controls. The problems I now have is that there are static and pops that don't happen when I just use the audio patch cable.

It really shouldn't be this difficult.

Hello eRandall38. A few months have passed since your post. But I am in same boat...'10 528i, xdrive, M-sport package, no NAV, no Premium, build=10/09. Were you able to get answers to your questions? Or, did you find a solution?

found this posting from others on the other side of the big pond ( http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=699811). they are using in 1-series but expect it is same issue we face. Note the discussion on page 3 regarding the enhanced BT option vs. standard BT. you may want to check your build sheet to see what options you have.

also called local dealer who reports that i need "infamous y-cable". Price = $75+tax. haven't given up the fight yet. may gamble on amazon or ebay.

I am connecting my IPAD to AUX input via bluetooth with this device:
Rechargeable Bluetooth V2.0 Music Receiver for iPhone / iPad / Cell Phone / PC - White

My kids love it. They play music from back seats.
It also works with Android devices.

OK ... I've tried to read through the 40 pages of this thread but hoping someone can summarize for me with the latest and greatest info since I suspect a lot of what I read early on is no longer the only option.

I have a 2006 530xi Wagon built 6/05 -- has cable for cd changer behind glove box but no changer. Has CCC nav with dvd and cd (does not recognize mp3 disk)t. Does have SAT radio though I am not subscribed. Does not have USB nor AUX.

I've tried the FM transmitter for iPod and it sucks - constantly searching for empty channels.

I don't really want to use the iPod itself with the AUX - so I'm not planning on adding the AUX unless I end up with the dashboard apart anyway then I'll probably add it as long as I'm in there.

I believe I could add MP3 disc function with coding to enable it (does that sound right with my setup?) but my system needs to use the DVD drive for Nav so I'd be limited to mp3 CDs and I'd prefer to hold more tunes than that.

The iPod interface seems to be workable but $3-400 for the part and then ridiculous install fees - yikes - unless I can install and code it myself.

Ability to read a USB stick would be perfect for me since I have all my mp3 files organized with all the tags and album covers - and I don't really use iPod play lists anyway (I listen to whole albums generally) so if I could read a USB stick and play mp3 files I think this would give me everything I need.

I'm unclear about whether or not I can add simple USB mp3 function to my car or if I would need to upgrade the whole system.

I've read about people replacing their CCC with newer CIC (if I understand that right) so they get USB and hard drive to store the nav info (my dvd nav is so slow). But I have no idea how involved that sort of thing is.

Can anyone confirm whether or not I can add USB to my car (and links to part number or instructions - dealer doesn't seem to know about it). I found a PDF file showing
Quote:
These installation instructions apply to cars from 03/07 only.
Retrofit kit No. 65 41 0 444 936 USB/audio interface retrofit kit
But dealer says that part number doesn't come up at all (plus note the date in the instructions - newer than my system)

From what I understand, USB is only used to transfer data to the hard drive, not play straight from it.

So looks like the USB refit is a no go.

Anyone know if a recode will enable MP3 play from my CD and DVD drive? Or is that a limit of my hardware? 2006 built in 06/05 with CCC nav, bluetooth, SAT - but no cd changer.

Looking into dension - but regardless of what gateway or iPod interface I use it sounds like I have to have mp3 capability coded into my system for it to work.

Do you have a CD drive installed already? Have you tried burning some MP3 files on a CD and see if it would play? I have an 06' as well and the CD plays MP3s.

Yes I have tried and no go. Unless there is some special format for MP3 disks that it expects. I simply burned a Data Disk with MP3 files like I would play on other devices without any trouble.

Do all the MP3 files need to be in the root of the CD or can they be in folders? Anything special about the way you burned your disk?

I can put the disk I made into my laptop and it reads/plays the MP3 files just fine - but tried it in both the CD drive and DVD drive in my 2006 and it doesn't find anything readable. Mine is 2006 but mfg date is 06/2005. Sport, Premium, Nav, Sat and a few other packages but not the premium audio package.

Re: The Ultimate iPod Info Thread

In my 2010 528i Xdrive I used the Apple USB cable first and it would allow me to see all songs from the Ipod. However, it would not allow me to see the playlist on my iPod. It also made me scroll and.click to get back to my list of songs everytime.I.started the car. I purchased the Ipod cable from my BMW dealership and everything works amazing. I now see playlists and when I start the car it takes me right to the song playing, so I can choose another song if I please. Worth the $90

40 pages is a lot of information to sift thru to get an answer about my iPod issue. I have a 2008 550i with navigation. I own an iPod that was probably bought in 2006. I currently have the "y" cable plugged in my center console. I bought the cable at Fry's Electronics for about $30. It is not the oem BMW part that can be bought at the dealership. Although I can play music thru the speakers, the idrive does not show me what songs are on the iPod. Could the culprit be the non BMW y cable that I am using? Also, the iPod does not charge when it is in use.

You are probably connected by way of the aux which does not support any iPod functions other than being able to play music. To get full functionality you would need to plug the iPod into a USB port. Check to see if you have one.

My car does have a USB port. However, when I plug the cable into the USB port, I get a reading of "do not disconnect" on the iPod and nothing happens. I can't hear the music.

USB port is only used to copy music from USB source to the car's hard drive, not to play from it. You would need the iPod retrofit and coding to get it to work.

Right beside that USB port should be the jack for the other end of the Y cable. I bought half a dozen Y cable from eBay once and not one of them would last more than 15 minutes before my iPod would freeze. You need the real thing...

Look on eBay for the OEM cable. I just put one in my 2008 550i, and it works fine. I found the cable for $17, and an 80gb iPod Classic for $30 in a local pawnshop. The iPod looks like crap, but it works fine, and the music info is viewable on the display. I can sort by artist, album, genre, song, and playlist.

I have no USB anywhere in my 2009 335i nor do I have navigation. I got what I assume to be the OEM MOST interface installed behind my professional head unit by BMW. It worked flawlessly for about 4.5 years, but now it has stopped charging and automatically playing. The CDC input is available, but the LIST function is not present and it will not play unless I open the glove compartment and wake it up. Then it works like it always has unless I am away from the car long enough for the ipod to go back to sleep.

This whole ordeal corresponds pretty well to a battery cable recall repair I had done at the dealership, and Occam's razor applies, but I really do not want to leave my car down there for such a trivial matter if it can be explained. I am 100% sure it is not iPod related, unless it is pure coincidence. I even tried a different iPod and it behaves exactly the same.

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

I have an '06 530i with the same stereo/NAV setup as you. I did a Dension, it works great now, but it's not easy. I bought a "Dension Enabler" on eBay that was supposed to code the car via the OBD2 connection. But my car's software had never been updated since built in 2005, and I believe BMW used to encrypt the OBD2 port, so the enabler didn't work. So I paid $240 to do a full software update at the dealer. Then, I still had to use the Enabler to get Dension to work.

Shoot me a message (anyone) if need help, I'll do my best to relay what I did. Jason

Can anyone help me?

I've read on some places that the OEM BMW iPod interface is pretty much plug and play with no coding needed, and some you have to code.

I just removed my 6 cd changer and connected an OEM iPod interface I got off of eBay. At this time, it's not reading my iPod video, iPod touch 4th gen, iPhone 5, and 5s.

Will I have to get my car coded at the dealership for it to be able to read my iPod? For all devices, when you plug them in, all the "CD" interfaces light up. After I click one, it says "reading changer(something like that)" and then the CD interfaces change to grey as if they're not there. The iPod video says"OK to disconnect" with the BMW logo.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Same here

Hey, I have a similar problem. First of all I drive the e60 and retrofitted navi professional and aux. All is working fine. Now I wanted to have the IPOD Interface in the gloves box. So I installed it and coded the FA +IPOD in the CAS. The car accepted these changes and displays now cd1...cd2... I plugged in my IPOD Touch (I think 3rd Generation) and I think the ipod also recognizes the device, because the volume control on the ipod disappears, but I can not select cd1 or cd2 or the other cds in the menu. If I eject the cd then the car says no acceptable audio medium inserted...

Is this possibly the ipod touch or is it a problem of my installation of the ipod interface into the most ring?
