05 X5 4.8is Intermediate Lever Problems

My 05 X5 appears to be suffering from the intermediate lever issue referenced in SIB 11-02-05. Local BMW dealership saw fault codes for #7 cyl misfires as well as other multiple misfire codes. Dealer wants approx $6800 to replace the levers, eccentric shafts and fuel pump/fuel filter. Took my X5 to an independent BMW repair shop today for 2nd opinion and they suggested changing the spark plugs, fuel filter replacement and transmission flush/new filter at $1200. The indy also stated I could be suffering from the SIB issue, but they didn't see the faults like the dealer did(car produced no fault codes for them).

Is it safe to drive my X5 if I don't correct the lever issue? I don't want to cause more issues by not repairing. The rough idle is more of a nuisance than anything else.

You'll do no damage by driving the car the intermediate lever issue. As soon as the car warms up the levers shift position. It's a minor tolerance issue but doesn't hurt anything. I would be wary of an indie that wants to charge you $1200 to replace things that won't fix your car.
