^Last year when I was learning to drive stick I and my mom had the same conversation.
Actually for the first six months I had my car I very rarely got above 2.5k and I got great gas mileage like 26-30 MPG. Then I found the other 4k of the tachometer and my gas mileage took a nose dive.
