Good E9x Hardtop Convertibles

No issues with my top and its been up and down 8 times today! Gotta love 78 degree Texas Decembers.

picked up 08 cpo with 22k miles last year, now 36k miles, top up and down a lot. no issue besides cable replacement and latch adjustment..

No leaking or other top troubles with my 3 year old (in 13 days) E93.

I realize I am in the minority on this forum, but I see no need to the air deflector. One of the reasons I have two convertibles is because I want the feel of the wind blowing around. If I didn't I would just get a E92 with a sunroof.

For me it's more of a temperature thing. It makes a pleasant difference on a 45F pre-dawn highway commute.

When it's warm, no need for the deflector except when the missus is along and we're going to be doing highway miles.

That would definitely be a compelling value proposition for me too. It would be much easier to just wipe the wind deflector as opposed to having to wipe down the whole back seat area.

I leave mine in all the time unless I need the back seat for a passenger. The top will go up even if the windscreen is in it's "up" position, and you can just push it down (it's hinged) so it doesn't impair rear-view vision.

Probably one of my most appreciated $300 accessories that I originally thought was way overpriced and not worth it. Everyone who doesn't use/have seem to be saying they don't have one because they like the "open" feel; you don't lose the open feel, you don't lose the wind and the smells and the sounds. It just reduces the back breeze to the point you don't even notice anything but the open sky (at speeds under 40). and at speeds over 40, it's composed enough that you aren't fatigued by wind noise/feel after a 6 hours highway trip.

My wife keeps one of those squiggy things in the glove box for her hair when we have the top down. I think it costs like one dollar. I saved $299 right there!

Oddly, if you roll up the windows with the windscreen up, there is less turbulance/noise in the cockpit than there is in a coupe with the sunroof open. I think of that mode as "giant sunroof" and only use it when it's really cold or sometimes if i'm on the phone.

Well said. Perhaps I've missed a post, but I've seen nobody saying they bought one and returned it because they didn't like it. All the posts about the deflector not being useful seem to be from people who haven't used one?

It works fine if you wear a sweater or jacket.

I do have a wind deflector that was provided as standard equipment for my other convertible. That car also has very little wind turbulence with the top down like the BMW. I tried it once and it now sits in the packing box in my garage, but I may start using it if it helps keep the interior clean. My 2011 335is does not produce much brake dust at all, but my other car gets covered in it very quickly.

LOL, guys. I have scrunchies tucked away in easy to get to places, I have my BMW Ball cap tucked in the secret squirrel compartment behind the back seat center armrest. But all things being equal, in the morning on my way to work, I don't want to put my hair in a ponytail, and in the afternoons, after a long day of work I just want some fresh air. The beauty of the wind deflector is it allows for long hair to blow in the breeze in a nice way. Back away from the direction of motion. Without a wind deflector the currents are way too circular and long hair just ends up in your face. That is not good when you are trying to see while you drive.

Bottom line, with the wind deflector and windows down, I need scrunchies and baseball caps only about 5-10% of the time I drive or ride top down. Without the wind deflector that instantly goes up to 35-50% of the time.

It was a very cool December Saturday....coming in from Palo Alto, I looked to hot coffee in Half Moon Bay.

My top was down.

I was wearing down.

Temp was going down as I made my way to Pacific waters....my car chimed: Snowflake Of Doom! I could take no more!

I raised my top and took off my face mask. Warmth was mine again. I vowed never to be without my wind deflector.



And indeed, I was never without it again.

Kat - I'll give you (or anyone else with long hair) a pass, as I realize it can be a PIA when you hair blows forward over your face. Guys (or gals) with short hair have no excuse

Just to illustrate how calm the E93 is, if you (or my wife/anyone with long hair) ride or drive my MGB, cap or scrunchy is mandatory 100% of the time due to the wind.

Give a pass? Have no excuse? Excuse for what, turning a good cabin even better? People who use a windscreen are somehow less cabrio-esque? Please.

It's not that I don't know how calm the cabin of my E93 N54 is without the windscreen, it's that I know how much MORE comfortable it is with it. I don't use it all the time. But I do use it, and it makes the interior ride much better under many circumstances. And there really isn't any downside (besides purchasing one).

I guess it does scare the bejesus out of you sometimes when a really strong crosswind blows it into the folded position with a shotgun-blast-like BANG! noise. But that's pretty rare, and fixable.

I've had my 2008 for two years now and no leaks, even in the rainy Pacific Northwest winters.
I use the high pressure hose at the car wash and no leaks. I do have a little rattle in the colder weather coming from the right rear. Gummi Pflege seems to fix it for a short time but it does come back.

I am a "no wind deflector" kind of person. Also, always windows all the way down when the top is down. For me a big part of having the top down, besides the sun, is the wind effect. But also, I'm mostly bald so don't have any hair issues. Even at highway speeds I find no significant noise problems, i.e., you can easily have a conversation.

More than an hour at speeds of 70 or above gets fatiguing to me....so on the highway, the windows go up unless I'm only going to be there a little bit.

Also, I've discovered that windows up with no windscreen is actually worse at higher speeds than windows down...90 mph with the windows up and with windscreen up is like 30 mph with windows down and no windscreen

In town they are always down, unless the giant truck beside me is making so much noise the person on the phone can't hear me

What great info. I'm new to these forums because I just got a 335i cv at Christmas. Was thinking the wind deflector also, mostly for my wife's long hair, but I'm 6-3 and the seat is way back. Will the deflector inhibit this?
