My E34 had some fuel tank shenanigans going on, it would indicate almost empty very soon. So, I grabbed a 2gal gas can and drove around til she stopped. Turned out to be over a hundred extra miles past empty and something like 30 or 40 city miles after "Range ---". I probably have the actual amounts somewhere on the E34 board but I was very surprised.

Very cool. An old train car I helped restore had to be moved like that so that it could reach its final resting point, and I've seen a few gigantic old houses being moved like that before. A LOT of care and effort goes into making it all happen.

After doing extensive research on my daily ideas, I've come to the conclusion every car I like is a miserable heap of crap, and every car I don't like is perfectly reliable.

The Saabs I like are generally pretty reliable, except the clutches seem to be made out of pudding. It'll die around 120k or so, and if you tune the car, half the people say it'll be fine and half the people say you'll start slipping immediately. Ok, so I'll toss a clutch in it. NOPE. They all use a dual mass flywheel that's nearly impossible to find a reliable upgrade kit for. (Aside from SPEC which everyone hates)

I should just buy a Civic. Or mindf*ck everyone and bring a Grand Cherokee home.

Joey, are planning on keeping the DD? Have you considered leasing a vehicle?

You could practically lease a car for ~300 bucks and beat the piss out of it and turn it in...

The new Dodge Dart looks nice and the SRT-4 looks promising, IIRC it'll come with close to 300hp, the Chevy Cruze or even a Hyundai Sonata (turbo)...

They come with warranties that covers basically anything on the car...

Idk just throwing out ideas...

The Dart is a letdown. Seems like the general takeaway message that I've read about it is that it sucks less than the Calibur, and isn't as good as any of its competitors. Just another rental car grade vehicle from Chrysler.

In some situations I think a lease can work, and for people that need to have a new car every 2-3 years, it makes sense, but I personally have no interest in it. I have a hard enough time writing my rent check, I hate the feeling of throwing money into a black hole.

I'm just frustrated because every car I find appealing is a miserable heap to own. I could solve my problem by just buying a used 1st gen Mazda3 hatch and shutting the hell up about it, but my soul withers at the idea of driving something with 160hp every day.

I like MKIV GTIs, but apparently they are complicated little things and if the timing belt isn't serviced the entire head has to be rebuilt. Same for the B6 A4. I like the Saabs but 1.) Finding one would be a bitch, and 2.) The clutches seem to be made out of pudding and tuning them tends to kill them off faster. I don't really want a BMW because I don't want to spend the most money I've ever spent at one time in my entire life (well, 2nd most) on something that doesn't feel new anymore.

Maybe I'll stretch my budget a little bit and go for an MKV 2-door GTI DSG. I prefer the 4-doors but they are way more expensive. The DSG is a bit more than the manuals, but apparently those things can't handle a freaking tune either, and surprisingly the DSG can.

Or I won't stretch my budget and I'll buy an E46 330i sport and be happy about it like a normal person. I could even through the CSLs on it.

The closer I get to actually being ready to buy the less fun shopping gets.

EDIT: Chad I'm gonna sign a contract with my roommate so if I bring an old Range Rover home as a "reliable DD" he can just put a bullet in my head right then. If the gas didn't kill me the parts would, I'd spend all my time feeding that thing instead of working on the BMW. I guess that's my frustration, I want a car that's cheap enough to buy and own to allow me to rebuild the BMW, but nice enough to enjoy on my way to work, and that's like trying to squeeze water from rocks. If I wasn't so determined to keep the BMW i'd have a much bigger budget and more tolerance for finickiness and high cost of ownership.

Joey, why are you worried about power so much? It's just a dd right?

16O HP is more than enough to do ANYTHING a dd will do.

Just find a nice cheapish car with good gas mileage and a non hateful interior and exterior.

Update on the scammer.
Scammer:
“Hello my daughter said the fund is not available for pick up....pls check the reference number well and get back to me asap.”

Scammer again:
“Hello Please i would like you to go to the money gram and change the name to Shamsu Mohammed the Custom Agent officer in charge of the item
Please kindly go to the money gram agent place and change the receiver name to Shamsu Mohammed and get back to me asap

Name-Shamsu Mohammed,
Address-72 Akweiman Rd,
City-Dansoman,
State-Accra,
Country-Ghana,
Zip code-23321,”

Me:
I canceled the old money gram and sent a new one.
Here is the info.
Alex
3171 Church Street
Saugerties, NY 12477
Total $100 + $8.75
Reference number 97518436
Question “Yippee-ki-yay”
Answer “mother****er”

This idiot actually went to the money gram place even though Duke Nukem sent him and told him to “hail to the king, baby”. I can’t wait for the email after he get my package with the picture of an iPhone in it. He seems to have the IQ of a bag of rock, so maybe he will think I it is a real iPhone and ask me why he can’t make calls. Whatever he emails me I know I will be good.

On a related note, this whole scammer thing has delayed the selling of my iPhones and now I keep trying to use the wrong one. Today I left the house with what I thought was my iPhone but when I went to use the bimmerfest app it was gone with the rest of my apps because I garbed the AT&T one with the broken lock button. I am selling them on my mom’s eBay account now so them should be gone next week but it is still annoying.

Honestly it sounds silly but its the f*cking traffic that i deal with day in and day out here that makes me want more power in the DD.

Almost every day on one of the onramps I have to take, I either carve down the entire thing at 60mph and then have to slam on the brakes behind a minivan sitting at the end of it. Then the soccer mom opens up her freaking 350hp V6 and completely disappears, which would leave me needing to do a 0-70 run in a little econobox and hope I make it.

The other alternative is just crawling through the entire onramp at 10mph, THEN doing a balls out run to 70. Obviously a lot of people around here drive cars with a lot less power than 160hp, so maybe I just need to suck it up and adapt my driving style to be a little less agressive. I'm just used to the ability of being able to accelerate out of frustrating situations.

I think what I need to do is stop philosophizing everything to death and just make a list of things to go test drive. I might actually like a Mazda3 if I got to know it, and that's one of the best eco-cars ever IMO.

Super quick scammer update.

Scammer: “Paypal has credit your account?”

Me: “I had not been paying attention to that. I thought all the money was going to come when you got your item. Has of right now my PayPal account has not been given any money from you.“

A small car with 15O to 2OO HP is plenty for takeoff Joey. It just won't be fast.

What's your budget?

Why do you have so many phones?

And underpowered cars on the road cause a ton of problems, don't get some POS that can't get out of its own way, even just for safety reasons...

Joey,

A) the rover won't kill you in repairs but will in gas. 12.4 was our total ownership average although that did include some boat hauling

B) Do you guys have metering lights on the on ramps there too?

I average about $50 to $100 an iPhone. I don't make a living of it but it is nice to have the spare cash to spend of fun things.

I know I'm not Joey, but yes that area does metered ramps. But they are a joke!

I understand the need to have a car move out of its own way. Va is so congested.

I'd say buy a DD keep it for 2 years or less and sell it. Do NOTHING to it but drive! Then sell and smile.

They are dumb.

No one really follows the lights, or the lights are so close together that its just a constant flow anyway.

Sure you have. You've seen video of 'Ring runs, right? That traffic light at the pit exit is the same thing. Spaces the cars out a bit. Keeps the 911 GT-Rs from running over use turtles in the M42 E36s.
