BMW Recalling 30,000 X5 Sport Utilities

BMW is recalling almost 30,000 of its diesel-powered 2009-12 X5 sport utilities because the power-assist for the steering may fail, according to a report from the automaker posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It is not really a big deal it is just replacing a mounting bolt.

You will get a letter on this probably in January. If you go for service before you get the letter ask if they have the parts yet.

I called the local dealership and they said the parts were in. Appt scheduled

Is there a MY/VIN # range list somewhere showing the cars being recalled? Has anyone seen the BMW communication to the dealers showing the procedure? I've seen the recall document and the availability of parts communications but not the actual procedure - I have searched this forum and others.

My car is in for service today and they said they will be dealing with the recall to replace the "bolt" at the same time.

I have mine scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday, if appears to effect all , here is a link

Thanks duct. Looks like I'll be making an appointment for my X5 also. Hopefully, they gimme a nice loaner

on a side note,

I just looked back at every time I've been in to the BMW dealer and ignoring once for service/replacement of oil level sensor, every other time (~3 now) has been for some recall lol

11/26/2012 is the day my new 2012 finished production...

Anyone read that document ductman linked?

Quite interesting history over the last two years.....

Looks like mine is safe.

Dealer did recall action a couple of weeks ago when our X5 was in for regular service.

Looks like the Canadians do not visit this forum or not enough of them do. Otherwise, we would have all seen this coming.

30k in 4 years seems awfully small to me in an 11 ~ 16 million car per year market.

My issue with the car was repeated warning message for "Engine working at Reduced Speed". The car was hooked up for over seven hours and the dealer has contacted BMW Canada for help. In other words they do not have a clue!!

Anyway, they had to give me a loaner - a 2013 X3, which is OK for me as I am still mobile.

I do hope they know how to fix that bolt!!

Are you saying the warning came up at the time they were doing the recall for the bolt?
I so much distrust the dealer "techs" that I tremble at the thought of this recall requiring some software "adjustments" or "resetting".

No, the the car was in for fixing the warning messages that kept on appearing for no reason. The "bolt" recall was going to be done as the car was there.

The SA called to say they have to wait for the part to come in on Monday to resolve the warning message issue, so I need to keep the loaner over the weekend and until they can return my car back to me next week.

Finally!!!!

I had to have my 2010 towed twice when this bolt snapped. I was concerned that it may happen again. Looks like they finally owned up to the problem.

Hey, for all of us (including myself) who've had the recall fix done already, how do we know that the bolts the dealers have put in our cars aren't old, defective ones that they've had in stock for a long while?

What kind of dishonest dealer would do that? My appointment is tomorrow and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will replace the bolt the proper way with the proper parts and that they will not screw up anything else while doing it. I've had so many dealer screw ups over the years (not BMW) that I just KNOW that if there is a sliver of room for a screw up they manage to find it. Having said that, I cannot believe that any dealer would knowingly use old/defective bolts to perform the recall.

1. The bolt isn't defective, it isn't torqued enough and they have per applied locktite to the threads...failure mode is loosening due to cold climates. Then breakage.

2. Instructions elsewhere state the part being sent has a special label for the recall. BMW will track each bolt into each car. There are a lot of things dealers will pull, but willfully subverting a safety recall isnt on even MY list.

3. Frankly I can't imagine any dealer stocking this bolt, pre-recall.

Had mine done set Friday, seems to be holding so far...
