Catalytic converter help
I have a 2001 530i with 150k unfortunately...about a week ago my cats started to rattle like a jackhammer I have no money to pay for the OEM where the cats are up by the manifold....so is it possible to run a more common set up where the cat is under the car and simple muffler in the back? I know the car will not pass smog if I go this route but I don't have the money for the OE converters

I've not see any threads or DIYs where someone did what you're suggesting.
You might try a shop for an opinion; perhaps out of state where they won't be so worried about California regulations. There are also several aftermarket catalytic converters available for a fraction of the OEM price. The least expensive are the 49 state version so if you have a non-California ship to address you might save some additional $s. Try a search - aftermarket cats have appeared in several threads.

UPDATE: I got a quote from a local muffler shop and he quoted me 700$ out the door is this a bad price for universal cats and new piping?
