I don't have the factory rear entertainment system in the F10 but my wife's X5 has it. In the X5, it does playback from where you stopped the disc. However, the system does not power on when starting the car. We have to manually turn on the system every time. I don't think much thought was put into these factory units as they are not a popular option on demand. Hence, not much feedback from customers for BMW to improve on.

Thumbs down

I have a 2011 X5 and it behaves exactly as you describe - have to power on every time and dvd does restart from last position.

Just got off phone with BMWUSA - they couldn't help. Just said that each version of HW/SW has it's own little idiosynchcrocies and that I'm probably stuck with the behavior.

While extremely convenient, considering the cost, I can't recommend the rear seat entertainment in a 2013 535i

We got the rear entertainment system for our 2.5 year old as we take the X5 on the weekends. I just couldn't justify the $2200 to add that to our F10, allocated that extra money on other options.

I agree that the system is convenient as compared to mounting an iPad(s) behind the front headrest(s). You would need to dismount the iPad each time you park your car. I don't think any reasonable person would want to leave a visible iPad in their car. I would also add the lack of HD on these factory units tells us the R&D dept isn't focusing on them. You can also ask some folks here that are very knowledgable on coding the F10 and they can refer you to someone local in your area that can code the entertainment system to your liking.

Finally!!!!

After over 5 months and 3 visits back and forth to the dealer, they finally upgraded the software. Works perfectly - picks up where you left off every time no matter how you turn on/off the car/player. Wish they would have upgraded sooner
