No Radio
Hi all
I have bought a facelift cd ask player and mmi screen to fit in my pre-facelift e65, fitting was straight forward but now have lost radio and have also noticed the telephone keypad has stopped working but this could be due to the new mmi having the bluetooth setting and my car does not have blutooth. Can anyone help? Also how hard would it be to fit blutooth and what parts would I need as my car does not hane bluetooth fitted? |

Did you code the MMI an the ask to your car?

If you were just replacing ASK with another pre it would be plug and play, but because it's post-facelift it needs to be programmed. I don't believe the MMI needs to be, but I am sure there are settings on there that you will want to change.

He needs more then coding the MMI to get his sound to work . There are 2 routes he can make to get his sound back . 1. The correct way ( my method ) Everything will work as it should , but it will cost you a few more $$$ ... 2. The half ass wrong way ( un-named ex members method ) Not everything works & you lose features . Let me know what route you want to take ?

Grant it you will get sound by not coding , But you could run into problems . For example - Some 1 came to me cause he put in a used ASK Unit , he got radio sound but lost PDC & Station programming . FYI this does not happen with all used ASK units Now as for the MMI not needing coding . Again you are 110% wrong unless you want features missing that the doner car didn't have that your car has or you want Greyed out features the doner car had that your car don't

Maybe you miss-read what I put.. I am talking about him getting his sound back.. I said I figured there would be things he would most likely want to program, but from what I was told it will "work" without being programmed. I mentioned I don't know this to be correct, but that's what I was told. I was also told a pre-face ASK would work without programming, but a post-face ASK wouldn't.. again, you are obviously the expert here so you will know best.. but I figured that is where is "no sound" was coming from. |

In your original post you state & I quote = " If you were just replacing ASK with another pre it would be plug and play" I simply gave you this example above about Pre-facelift . = " For example - Some 1 came to me cause he put in a used ASK Unit , he got radio sound but lost PDC & Station programming . FYI this does not happen with all used ASK units "

Well, to me you are an expert, and I don't know of anyone else I would trust more.. I am glad to hear that, I always thought a pre ask was plug and play, but evidently there is a chance that isn't true..

I'm just trying to give you a little knowledge from what I have personally found . Back to the ASK Unit it just all depends on the features on the car you get the used unit from I guess ??? I have installed a couple that worked fine & only needed the VIN changed to match , but there are others I have done that needed more coding done .

I have never changed any of these, just going off what I have read or people have told me. I believe I am having ASK problems so I am glad to hear this because I hate going into things with information only to find out when I'm stuck it's wrong.. So I guess the best change I'd have in getting one that would work is finding a car with similar options? However after hearing that, even if it does just "work" I wonder if I would loose features because it's not correct.. Although I would probably buy a post-face ASK anyway if I am going to spend the money..

Guys,
Im pretty sure if you fit an FL ASK unit you may need to change the following coding parameter in the ASK coding data: Quote:

So I can basically buy a used ask and jus take it 2 local dealership and get it programed...

I dont think so, I would recommend asking them first, Depending on what modules have been upgraded the dealer computer will have a fit and tell them to replace facelift modules with the correct module for the car. This is what I have heard, obviously its different for every vehicle due to specification, current software version within modules etc...
It all boils down to the vehicle order code, a string of data stored in the CAS and LM, its basically the DNA of the vehicle, It holds all the details about the car even down to what colour floor mats it had when new! The BMW diagnostic computer reads this code to ascertain what the vehicle production date is, chassis, region variant, engine, transmission, interior spec, and all the option codes for the vehicle. The major issue is the production date, there is a fixed set of options that are only possible during certain production years, i.e. bluetooth or night vision cannot be in the early production date because it had not yet been implemented. So when the computer reads the date code and then expects to see a pre-facelift ASK fitted and there is actually a facelift ASK its not happy! TBH you want to be friendly with the local dealers technical department, they may be able to program the module manually over a lunch break or something for some cash in hand! thats an ideal situation! In reality they just press the buttons and aren't trained at this level or simply don't have the technical in depth knowledge to do such tasks. Usually the dealer computer will diagnose the car, run some tests automatically, tell them what to replace and then automatically program the module and code it with very little human intervention. I would suggest finding someone local that can code the ASK for you, some indy BMW specialists will most likely be willing to help, or have a stab at it yourself! theres plenty of info on this site and tutorials online etc...
