Z3 SRS system fault codes

I'm getting a fault code 02-17 which is "Sensor, side air bag, right, data fault".
Does this mean the airbag is defective and should be replaced?

Not necessarily. The fault is coming from the sensor, not the airbag. The sensor is located under the passenger's seat. You have to remove the seat and lift the carpet and you should find a little square box with a small wire harness going to it. The sensor is mounted on the front side of a cross member underneath the seat. Before you mess with it be sure to disconnect the battery. Check the wiring for any damage and clean ad reseat the connector. Put everything back together (the occupancy sensor in the seat will cause a fault if disconnected) hook up the battery ans see if you can clear the fault.
