Whirring Sound

Anyone know what the whirring sound is when you first open a door on the X1 after it's been sitting for a while?

At first I thought it was a power sear moving back, but that does not appear to be the case.

I've noticed this too. I don't know if its a battery kicking in or what. I also noticed that once its parked after a few minutes you hear a clunk and the noise turns off. I'd love to know what it is?

Don't know what it is but it happened on my E90 and E46 as well.

Rumor has it that the sound you hear is the high pressure fuel pump starting up. Apparently it likes to prime the system prior to the engine starting.

I know about the HPFP priming (this was added via a software update on E9x), but there seems to be another noise after the cars shut off.

Are you referring to the noise from the engine bay after shutting off? If so I believe its the turbo spooling down.

I also wonder about the noise when you first open the door after its been sitting...thought it was a release for the gas cover. Still curious.

The gas cover door opens much quicker. This is about a 2-3 second long noise. And besides the gas cover unlocks with the door locks which are already opened.
