Subwoofer Replacement?

I fear i may have blown a subwoofer in my z3. my understanding is it is a self contained box containing two 4" subs. I do know it is dead center in the car between the rollbars.
I also understand some z3's came with a self contained 6" instead.

Questions are, are these interchangable? can i swap for the single 6"? how much does it cost for each? and are there better alternatives?

I have an aftermarket deck and amp (thanks to previous owner) and a bsw 6-piece set. All bsw could not help with were the subwoofers, and dealerships are quoting me $680-$850.

please help! thanks.

Searching the forum i found many alternatives to factory, i guess my main question is the twin 4" to 6" interchangability. If its wise to go with factory replacements or go aftermarket.

Neither box is available anymore. You will have to search places like e-bay. The later single-speaker box is the more desirable one since you can install a 6.5" Kicker in it. They are quite hard to find. You can also replace the two 5.25" speakers in the 2-speaker box, but it won't have the power of the single-speaker Kicker. You can also fabricate your own box. I duplicated the single-speaker box out of fiberglass and installed that.

subwoofer

I do not if this will help you, but Tomkinson BMW Parts.com has a Carver 400 watt surefire sub for $486. (part # 82110027937) I replaced my old sub with this one in my 2001 Roadster. The sub was compatible with my stock Business H/K system. All I had to do is plug it into the existing wiring in the car....same for the amplifier. It has been sometime since purchasing it, but I think this includes the 400 watt amp & subwoofer. (could be wrong) It fits into existing space between the seats. If interested, you might go online and check it out.

Your 1998 HK subwoofer box has two 5.25" speakers mounted back-to-back and wired with reversed polarities. They are actually identical to the ones in the footwells. The impedance is somewhere around 3 ohms each, so you will have to replace them with 4-ohm speakers.

Also, that subwoofer box has a snorkel thing that often buzzes. That can be fixed with a little foam tape where it might be touching something. Maybe that's all you need.

Actually, this might be a good excuse to replace the entire system. There is really nothing worth saving except the wiring. You need to replace the head unit, amplifier, front component speakers, and subwoofer. The difference in sound will be amazing and you can incorporate modern conveniences such as Ipod interface, etc.

So since the speakers are all 5.25, i suppose the same BSW's could replace them? (i know nothing of ohms)
