I really don't think that ff recommends dino simply because that was what was widely available in the early 1990s.

I do not know of any design differences, unless we are going way back before these cars were built. I see no reason not to use oil that is proven to perform better in the cold and the hot. Oil that has greater shear strength and better additives. I have never seen a car develop leaks when swtiched to synthetic, just my experience but, I have done it to a couple dozen vehicles.
At the end of the day, engines almost never fail due to oil anymore and, oil is almost never a performance improver.

Ask Castrol. I went to a 'trade' lecture on their products. They say use the oil recomended in the hand book for the vehicle. I.E. My R50 is OK with synth but my E30 runs dino. I'm sure their R&D is accurate, even though their synth is twice the dino price.
