Buy with confidence?

Today, my 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor was totaled in an accident. Thankfully, all are ok. I immediately started looking for replacement options and came across the following offer:

http://www.mboftampabay.com/used/BMW...d16feea42d.htm

I have been reading ome general posts/comments about the X3 and I am on the fence between making an offer or not due to what I have read about the costly maintenance. I plan on test driving this car tomorrow. If I experience the joy of driving this "ultimate driving machine" should I buy with confidence? Thanks!!_a_

Its high for an '06, although it does have very low mileage. The '06 is the last year of the first series X3 so all the bugs have been pretty well sorted out. Around here an '06 would wholesale for about $11K and retail for $14K or so. Beware of flooded cars coming to the market in your area too! I suspect that an MB dealership would not be party to that sort of game however. If you are seriously interested be sure to get a prior purchase inspection (PPI) at a indy BMW specialist.

I don't think I could ever buy a used BMW, even a low-mileage one, with the same confidence I could buy a low mileage Japanese car. After test driving it you're going to have to decide whether the driving experience is worth the likely additional maintenance + repair expense, and budget accordingly.

Also, depending on when the car was originally purchased you may qualify for a BMW PowerTrain Plus warranty (see attached pdf). They offer it if the car is less than 7 years old, so you'll have to check the in service date for the 2006 you're looking at it. I think you'd qualify for 1year/12 months/12,000 miles, but a BMW dealer could confirm that.

I think a manufacturer's warranty is better than a 3rd party warranty the MB dealer is likely to offer. You can check with any BMW dealer for pricing. Different dealers charge different amounts, so you can post in the Ask A Dealer section of these BimmerFest forums to get a competitive quote.

That's low miles but a high price. I bought my '05 with 30k miles for $23k in August '08. It was a CPO from a BMW dealer. I think that was a pretty decent deal, but on par at the time with other X3 available in my area.

That is very subjective, I bought my 05 in Aug/2008 with 40,000 miles and now it has 125,000. My total on repairs and maintenance cost to date has been less than $1200 and that includes a new OEM battery ($200) and a new starter replacement ($400). The rest are brakes, fluids, filters, spark plugs and valve cover gasket. That does not includes a new set of tires. I'd just add that I do *most* of the work myself so that helps with the costs.
The thing that I love the most is how the SAV still driving and running like new! Safest vehicle on snow/ice/rain I have ever driven. (Read about Xdrive) You don't get that with a 7 year old 125000 miles jap.
