How taboo is this really with BMW? What do you do when you take the car in
for service given this 'may' invalidate the warranty? Would they know that you've made changes and would they give you a hard time about it?

Also for a leased vehicle would you restore to factory defaults before turning back in?

Me, I don't worry about it. Some do though. You can easily reset a coded module to as delivered condition, bring it in for service, and then recode it. It's not a big deal at all.
