Current 740i/iL owners - do you feel it's adequately powered?
I've taken a few test drives and I think it is. Just curious to what existed owners think given their everyday usage. Thanks

I've only had mine for 3 days....but there's plenty of power.
Also, I had no expectation of getting decent gas mileage in this car, but driving it home from PCD I got 27mpg on the highway -- one tank from Spartanburg, SC to Orlando, FL. I was stunned.... bonus |

I have had mine for close to a 1.5 years. Never felt it had inadequate power for regular use. Especially fun to drive on the freeways. You can get way pass any legal speed limit quickly and without even noticing it.

One thing that made me "ok" with the 740 decision over the 750 was looking at 0-60 times. I drove a (used) Audi S6 with the V10 5.2ltr, then drove the 6 cyl 740....and the 740 felt faster. When I did the research, it was about equal to the S6 in 0-60 times.

you would see the difference only in Germany on the Autobahn, or other places where there are no speed restrictions...which arent many..... At lower speeds the performance is basically the same....at higher speeds which are basically illegal in the US, is where the 750 would show the difference in acceleration.

I drove the 750 and did the back and forth a few times between the two. I think I felt a weight difference(in the sway?) and in the end decided on the 740. I really cant tell the diff but I don't drive over 80MPH ever.

Curious what the 740 has for a powerplant and what the numbers look like?
![]() It isn't available up here and I'm too lazy to look it up.

its an N54 3.0Liter inline6 with twin turbos, 6speed. 326hp with 450nm torque and does 0-60mph in 6seconds for the LWB, and around 5.8seconds for the SWB.

I feel its adequately powered however , the throttle tip-in or turbo lag may under some conditions be quite noticeable . On the other hand, the leaner weight compared to 750's V8 , makes it stop quicker and handle better.

It does the job intended, its quick but not fast. I've never had an issue trying to get out of my own way, or trouble passing - on the freeway or on city streets. The 0-60 of 6 seconds feels dead on. Its a really good engine, only in Comfort+ does it feel laggy around town. I tend to leave it on Comfort, or swap to Sport when driving City/On Ramps, then going to Comfort+ for my bulk of freeway driving.
With that being said, I'd get a 750 next time. I'm very happy with my BMW, just this level of car deserves a larger engine for as much mass as it has. The I6 is about 2-300lbs lighter (~4400 I6 vs ~4700 V8) so the power difference is slightly negated. But for only ~7-10k more I could have had the V8 with more power, and more standard options.

Actually , the Car & Driver comparison between 740 vs 750 found 740 quicker to 70 mph....from there on 750 overtakes & never looks back .
