LIMP Mode

Hi, I'm back! I appreciate everybody's advice but my little car is STILL going into limp mode. To refresh your memory I have a 2003 325ci with 153,000 miles... the mechanic has already replaced the THROTTLE BODY, INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER VALVE and AIR MASS METER BOOT, I'm only able to drive the car for a few days before it goes into limp mode again. the battery was tested at Autozone and it was perfect. He did a scan today and following is what came up:

36 EGS-Gear monitoring 4 (P0734)
31 EGS-sympton gear monitoring, transmission monitoring B2460_99999
41 EGS-gear monitoring 4 (limp-home program) B2460_99998

299A DME: CAN fault management EGS-OBD management CAN Bus B1214_MS45CAN
27CC DME: DMTL: leakage-minor leak detected diagnostic module for tank leakage (DMTL) B1214MS

I hope some of this is useful. I want to keep my car but I can't really drive any distance without it going into limp mode, should I change the transmission? can't afford to do it but I want to be able to drive the car. Thanks everybody for you help.

sorry to hear of your troubles. my 2000 328i is also in limp mode supposedly due to a bad throttle body. the work was done at a good shop. however I may take it to the bmw guy next week. was it a bmw guy that worked on yours? I've been told the computer can mess up and cause repeated trips into limp mode.

Check the fluid level in the transmission. I just had one this morning at work that would go into limp mode because it had a trans fluid leak. Replaced the line, topped off the fluid, and it was fine.

Hi Dale9n,

Thank you for your response, this is an independent German Auto repair shop, I know a couple of people that swears by him, he repaired their BMW's, however their cars were not in limp mode. He said my computer is fine every time it goes into limp mode he scans and reset the computer? and the car runs fine for a few days, in fact the last time he re-set it the car went six days before going into limp mode. He just scanned it Friday so I'm two days in with no problem yet, maybe it will last seven days this time. I love my little car I just want someone find the problem and fix it. I'm trying not to go to the dealer, it might be cheaper to buy another car.

Hi Jimmys 530i,

I love these names.... the transmission fluid was changed two months ago, that was the first thing another mechanic did when it first went into limp mode. The german repair mechanic checked the fluid a week ago and it was half a quart low, it's not leaking out, where did that half quart go? or maybe the first guy didn't fill it up? We've changed the parts, the fluid was changed recently and the battery is fine, what else is left to check, what would the dealer check? By the way, I asked him if I should go to the dealer for a diagnostic, he says he has the same machine that the dealer use. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can get through New Years day without my baby going into limp mode, wish me luck!

Hey Fast Bob,

The fluid was changed a couple of months ago, it keeps going into limp mode, the good thing is he's not charging me every time I go back... that's like once a week, maybe after New Years he can take the car apart. I have a dumb question, is this a transmission problem, or is this something to let me no my tranny is going out?
