Looks like this is turning into another "which oil is best post" so here's my 2 cents worth.
My buddy bought a twin turbo 911 that we drove back from Iowa to Boston. He had he V1 and I brought my Escort 8500. The V1 was always giving false alarms 10:1 to the Escort. The Escort would detect traps a few hundred feet before the V1. But in the end, if you are the first car or the only one out their you doen't have a prayer. Don't forget about Laser....when it is detected they have you. I use an Escort 8500 and their Laser jammer. The new 9500 is even better. Spend some money and get something worth having or slow down. |

The main thrust of this issue is, if you regularly drive more than 5 mph over the limit, you should purchase one of the top-rated detectors, and use it religiously....it WILL pay for itself, many times over. With most jurisdictions being in financial trouble, their LEOs are being leaned on to raise revenue via stricter traffic enforcement. Speed Intelligently !

Alright now I'm convinced, looks like I'll go for a higher quality detector.

Btw, can anyone tell me why there's a $50 difference between blue and red light display detectors?

Just searched more and it turns out you get a misdemeanor is CA for a jammer, but there are ways to avoid getting caught...

The other important step in all this is to have a GOOD ATTORNEY!
Here in western Washington state, there are many attorneys that handle speeding tickets on a regular basis. For anywhere from $150 to $350, they can (with 95% or better sucess rate), get your ticket dismissed. In rare instances, they will have it "deferred", which means you still pay a fine, but as long as you do not get another conviction in the following year, the ticket stays off your record. Talk to your friends, or check with your local BMW forum for your area to find these attorneys, then save the info for future use.

I have had my V1 for almost two years now and I have to say its better than anything out there. It has proved itself time and time again over my friends 9500i. One instance that blew him away was that we were both driving down I-55 open interstate and I got a very weak signal on my V1. And it stopped. I called him asked if he had got anything. He said no and then I got the signal slightly stronger and it disappeared again. He still had nothing. Every time mine went off the signal was stronger. I was knew it was trooper doing on off radar. It took my friend a quarter of a mile after my first signal for it to show up as his weakest signal. By then my strength indicator was almost a third of the way up. Sure enough the trooper appeared over the hill. I'll never trust anything else.

Sounds like good advice.
When you're ready to install, see this: - All about the BMW Glovebox Flashlight Cigarette Lighter Power Adapter (1) (2) (3) & how to install a Valentine or Escort radar detector (1) (2)
