Blackout Tint for Black Sapphire Metallic
I don't post often but I just wanted to post a blackout tint I found that works well with Black Sapphire Metallic paint, along with some pics. Helpful for those DIYers.
In the pics, the car has wax on it, but the tint hasn't, so there was a minor sheen difference at the time I took the shots. The rough looking edge on one shot (DS Rear) is actually water in the gaps, not the film. The nice thing is the tint is not only black, but metallic, and nearly a dead match.
The film is 3M Scotchprint Wrap Film 1080 Series GLOSS Black Metallic G212. I got a 12" x 60" roll for $17 online. Should last a decade or more outdoors...so they say.
For the rears I popped out the reflectors, warmed the reflector and tint with a hairdryer, "squeegeed" the tint on with my thumb from one end to the other while I peeled the backing off the tint with my other hand, wrapped the edges, trimmed, rewarmed for good measure and reinstalled.
For the fronts I warmed the lenses in place, "squeegeed" the film on, used a thin nylon blade to work the film into the edges (with heat), used an X-Acto blade to trim in the groove (lightly), peeled off the excess and used the nylon blade and hairdryer to make sure the edges were tucked in tight.
So far so good. It's been through snow, encased in ice, salt and had a few blasts with a power washer with no problems.
