Start with reading/scanning the codes. That's the whole purpose of the OBD III mandate...to simplify the ability to diagnose the electronic emissions to help with clean air.
There's o need to start throwing money at things without first scanning your car to see which sensors registered the fault. From there you'll be aware what area to look...sometimes you have to look upstream of the sensor...and sometimes the issue is directly related to the sensor that faulted. If you don't have an OBD III scanner, in most states places like Autozone will read the codes for free. Once you have the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) your just a few keystrokes a way from finding the area. There's so much info on the Internet about OBD III codes...you can type "BMW OBDII xxxxx" (where x=the DTC 5 digit code) into a google search box and find info, reason,& solution for the code. You can also search here or post the DTC "P" code here for help.
