panel replacement questions

ive got a 98 740il that was rear ended and now the insurance company says its totaled my question is ive found a 2000 740i in the junk yard that has most of the parts i need to put it back together, will the hood and trunk be the same for a 1998 740il and a 2000 740i?

Go to this link http://realoem.com/bmw/select.do and type in the last 7 digits of your car's VIN. Then click the browse parts button and work your way to the BODYWORK main group...and HOOD sub group and get the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the hood.

Then go back to the first page where you see PART NBR SEARCH written in red letters and enter that 11 digit BMW part nbr. It will give you a list of all BMW models that use that part. You should also see a link that says E38 DETAILS...if you click that link, it will list all the e38 models that use that same part nbr.

You do have to be careful because some e38s had aluminum hoods and some have steel. If you search using the specific BMW part nbr that was used on your car...it will allow you to search for other BMWs that use the same parts as your car. Also pay attention to the SUPPLEMENTAL column that has the TO & FROM info...this will help you steer clear of purchasing items that are for cars with a different build date range.

Interesting - so which models had ali bonnets then?

If you have a E38 body [I]most[I] body parts will interchange.

I think the early V12s had aluminum hoods...check the parts database. If not the early, then it was the latter.
