need advise, 2008 X5 trany problem

Dealer got back to me and unfortunately he put in a used transmission with 50k miles on it.

He told me a new trany installed by BMW would run about $10k.

I've decided to dump this car and get my money back, which he has agreed.

I'm now looking at a lexus RX-something.

Probably the best thing for you. I would fault the seller for this situation and not BMW quality.

That is pretty drastic jump from BMW. Any reason why not Acura? Their older RDX with sh-AWD is supposed to be sporty. It has better AWD performance than Lexus.

I've had Acuras and Hondas and they can't make an auto transmission to save their life either. I looked at the MDX, its nice, I just don't care for the look of the front end.

Has anybody heard good things about the Audi Q7?

Audi has a very nice AWD. I highly recommend it if sporty is not a high priority. It is not as sporty as BMW X5. In Audi case, you really need to research on carbon build up. I know the new supercharged 3L are very good and seemed to resolve the problem that started in 2011 model year. You will need to look up the older 3.6L for yourself to see if it has the same problem.

Older Porsche Cayenne is supposed to be better than BMW in reliability. That is something to consider.

Honda had a problem with their transmission due loading problem on their heavier cars like oddessy. It has since then been resolved as far as I can tell. That was an early 2000 problem if I recall.

Personally, I would give BMW X5 another try.
