Buying 18" style 350 wheels

After a tough New England winter and tire bubbles and searching this forum, I have decided to buy a dedicated set of winter tires on 18" style 350 wheels. A few questions;

1) is the local BMW dealer the best place to buy the wheels? Any on-line places?

2) looks like Dunlop SP Winter sport tires are preferred?

3) I am thinking of going regular, non-run-flat tires with a mobility kit. Any thoughts on summer tires. Looks like folks prefer the Michelin Super Sports?

what size sidewall can you put on the 350s?

dunlop sp, blizzaks, or the alpins from michelin.

I just ordered the 350 wheels 8" width from getBMWparts.com - you have to search by part number 36117842650 does not come up in the wheel section. If you want to go staggered 9" width is 36117842651. They had the best price I found but may be other sources.

I'm not sure if they'll be my summer tires, if I give up on the 351 19" due to too many problems with minimal sidewall. My first bubble showed up at 330 miles on the GY LS2. Just got on the waiting list at a Goodyear store for a replacement.

Or they will be my winter wheels, with summer's on the 19" 351's - probably conventional tires (getting rid of the Run Flats) and use a mobility kit, patch kit, tools and/or roadside assistant hopefully infrequently.

Does not make me happy the way BMWNA has created this problem.

Thanks. Could you help me understand the decision between the 8" vs 9" ? I have M-Sport if that makes any difference.

short version.

xDrive cars in the US come with the same size tires all around, on a 550i(or 535i) xDrive M Sport it would be 245/40-19. If you have a 550i then staggered 245/40-19 on front and 275/35-19 rear, I believe. The diameters are the same (within a fraction) but more width on the rears, for the RWD.

With winter tires width is usually not a good thing so you'd run with the narrower tires all around.

On the 18" wheels, you'd go 245/45-18 all around. Staggered you'd be 245/45-18 front and 275/40-18 rear.

For summer tires, yes the Michelin Pilot Super Sport looks great from some reviews and first adopters. They are very new, just released this month.

Looks like my local dealers "discounted" price is $ 400 even. They list for $460. Looks like BMWParts.com is $ 369 a wheel, plus shipping. Total shipping for 4 wheels is $60 , so its $383 vs $400.

Are there other parts you need to order? TPM? etc?

order TPMS sensors from Tirerack, better price than BMW. If you don't have a rep there Damon at x643 is great to work with.

center cap can come from either.

You will also need valve stems. They list for $15.28 at dealer but got them for $12.50 each. TPS lists for $82.71 but got them for $64. Best prices for wheels (sensors, valve stems) were from BMW of Newport (RI) after checking out all the forum recommendations. Saw post that their prices are best in area providing you mention this forum. Ask for Garry in Parts. Costs nothing to make a call or two.

Note that I changed from RFT 19's to NRFT less than a week after taking delivery. Bought the wider 9" wheels for staggered set up and installed Pilot Super Sports. Very happy with them after 500 miles. Hope I will still think so when I get my AMEX bill.

So I ordered the 350 18" BMW wheels for my 550X M-Sport today. None in stock at all in the US - so must be ordered from Germany. Sounds like a few folks are already getting the wheels to be fitted with winter tires in the late fall.....

Wow, glad I have my four just waiting on picking winter tires. When I ordered a few months ago from getBMWparts, was told mine had to come from the California and I'm in NY.

What is the deal with BMW stocking parts though?? I'm three weeks into waiting on a windshield that may be another month or two. Other posts with various unobtainable parts...

Anyone know the offset for the 350 18" BMW wheels? I have some 18" 162 wheels from my 3 series that I was planning to use as winters for my ordered 535xi if the offset and bolt pattern match. Anyone know if the 162's will work?

Thanks!

on the cusp: which wheels to buy?

I am just like OP. I have a 2010i x with M package. Need winter wheels.
Was thinking I would buy 245/40R18 Bridgestone Blizzak WS70's and the wife insists I buy BMW wheels for these winter tires.

Car has the 350m wheels. I believe all four wheels are 8"x18" with 30mm ET.

Being an ex-road racer and now track day guy (in a high HP STi), I am always interested in better performance. However, I must keep any performance upgrades of the Bimmer from the wife... It's "her car". It's also our road car.

Here's my plan and where I need help:
From what http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/member.php?u=223254 suggested, I could run wider /bigger wheels on the rear of my X? If there's nothing wrong with this (and I can't see why not), then I will buy a set of BMW wheels that will go with the car, but be bigger in the rear like the 9" width #36117842651. I see that these have a 44mm offset. That's 1mm further out. I'd like to go more.
Are there others that look really good that would be as good a choice and have less offset and be wider rims? They don't have to be 350M's, but they have to look as good. I like the slender spoke effect and more than four spokes.

Then I take wheels, tires and car to the tire shop and put the snow tires on the stock, 8x18 rims. Bigger wheels and/or less offset wheels will be for the summer, high-performance tires.
Ideas? Within reason, what will fit?

I have the BMW recommended Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D tires on 18" BMW Style 350 Wheels. This is my third winter with them on crappy, pot hole infested Chicago roads. This combination works great in the cold and and snow. My 19" wheels are awesome in the late spring, summer and fall, however I replaced four performance tires with bubbles. I have not had any bubbles with my winter set up.
