SES P1421 & P1423 and it will not stay running at idle

so i've been getting these two codes. SES comes and goes and its these two codes. sometime i would have to clear them but most of the time they go away by it self.
When I first start it it will run as long as i keep the revs above 1100 rpm this is cold if I let the revs drop to idle it will run for about 20 to 30 sec. then stop running. its only when the car is cold. once the car is all warmed up its fine no problems at all.
any help would be appreciated thank you all

Nobody memorizes codes, and P1xxx codes are notorious for being specific to the engine computer anyway.
You need to post the description of the Pcodes along with what you have done to diagnose the problem and the results of your searches of others with the same computer and same code descriptions.

Even though this link is from the VERY best of E39 Links, the code listings and misfire diagnostics and drive cycles and scanners all apply equally well to the E46.

- How to identify all BMW computer-specific OBDII DTC diagnostic fault codes (1) & how to better understand the key EPA federal test procedure (FTP) concept of the BMW SES "drive cycle" (1) & how to diagnose a typical BMW E39 engine misfire (1) or a sporadic-temperature-change cold-engine intermittent misfire (1) obtaining the pending or diagnostic trouble code (DTC) using free or freeware scans (1) [except in California or Hawaii (1) (2)] or the cheapest ODII scanner in the world (1) (2) or a better overall scanner (1) or the best diagnostic tools (1) (2) (3)

Good luck!

I've got most of them memorized. Those codes are associated with the smog pump/air pump whatever you want to call it.

Check your lines from it to the back of the manifold. See #'s 3 and 4 below. I almost guarantee it is broken. Cheap and easy fix.

Wow. You're good!

There are many Pcodes, and they are sometimes computer specific.

For example, most people think a Pxxxx means only one thing - but that's just not true.
What it means depends on which computer is in that bimmer.

Luckily, the 1421/P1423 Pcodes don't have multiple meanings, depending on the engine computer:
- P1421 BMW-FC=81 Secondary Air System (Bank 2)
- P1421 BMW-FC=246 Secondary Air System (Bank 2)
- P1423 BMW-FC=80 Secondary Air System (Bank 1)
- P1423 BMW-FC=245 Secondary Air System (Bank 1)

But that's not always the case, for example, a P1624 in a bimmer could mean:
- P1624 BMW-FC=168 Pedal Position Sensor Potentiometer Supply Channel 1 Electrical
- P1624 BMW-FC=168 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature))

And a P1532 in a bimmer can also mean different things depending on the engine computer:
- P1532 BMW-FC=132 'B' Camshaft Position Actuator Control Open Circuit (Bank 2)
- P1532 BMW-FC=132 (S54 to 09/00) Throttle Valve Control Circuit

And the description for a P1476 also depends on the computer in that bimmer:
- P1476 BMW-FC=184 Leakage Diagnostic Pump Clamped Tube
- P1476 BMW-FC=184 M52 MY99/00: Leakage Diagnostic Pump Reed Switch Circuit

Same with P1523, P1161, P1743, P1749, P1750, P1476, P1270, P1522, P1523, P1519, P1580, and probably a host of others I don't know about that have different meanings depending on which BMW computer is installed.

The point is that "most" people don't memorize Pcodes, especially since accuracy can require knowledge of the engine computer. So the main goal is to train new users to post the diagnostic code description along with the diagnostic code itself when asking for help - in order to get better help more efficiently.

Nothing more than that (and to provide all the descriptions to enable them to do so).
