Mongo just lost 60.4lbs!
I received my new wheels this evening and couldn't resist mounting them after dinner. As a guy who values the reduction of unsprung weight, I had to order a set of lighter wheels and non-RFT tires to both improve performance and to reduce the ride harshness. With any luck, the mpgs will benefit a bit too.
BMW 300M & Bridgestone Deuler HP Front Drvr: 80.4lbs Front Psgr: 80.0lbs Rear Drvr: 88.4lbs Rear Psgr: 89.0lbs O.Z. Superturismo Dakar & Continental DWS Front Drvr: 63.6lbs Front Psgr: 63.6lbs Rear Drvr: 75.0lbs Rear Psgr: 75.2lbs From a weight point of view, I could have saved another 23lbs if I went with 285/40R20's on all four corners. Now, only if I was patient enough to special order a set of custom forged wheels, I could have trimmed even more weight... ![]() The only difference between the pics below was I used a flash in the second one. The sun had set, yet the was plenty of daylight for a slow shutter shot, but the flash pic made it look like it was night time.

Gorgeous wheels!
O.Z is just such an awesome brand - I put them on my 911 a few years ago and loved the result - aesthetically and dynamically. BTW I also went with Continental DWS for my 550iGT on 20 inch wheels and liked the enhanced performance especially in the wet and the more "textural" feel they imparted to the steering although they were slightly noisier. Mongo looks like an outrageous over the top ride - M There is No Substitute - congrats again!

Great looking wheels! I thought about putting snows on my 20" 300M's and then going with a set of local manufactured HRE one-piece forged but my better half reminded me we are supposed to be saving for the M6 vert ED this summer
![]() I really like the look and finish on your OZ's - pics when installed please

72.4 pounds dropped!
I removed the stock wheels and tires and installed 10x20 BBS SV in matte titanium finish with Continental DWS 275/40x20 on all 4 corners. This lowered the ride height by about 3/16" front and rear and nearly achieved the stock stance: each wheel was moved outboard by 4mm from stock. Since the rear tires are 40 mm narrower than stock the rear tires are in the same place in the rear fenderwell but don't extend as far inboard. Not noticeable unless you are directly behind and down low. For me the advantages of a square set-up with rotatable tires offsets the staggered stance. This is the only car we have that I can rotate the tires - everything else is staggered!
Unfortunately, BBS doesn't make a fitment for the X5M in 20" so I ended up using 4 fronts from the X5 fitment. BBS makes a 22" fitment for the X5M but this just wouldn't work out in Montana. BBS also does 10x20 SV wheels in ET40 so one could achieve the exact front track. I have 18mm BBS PFS spacers in the rear; 15mm spacers would have brought the rears in 3mm to stock. Sadly, I couldn't find 285 or 295 tires that would have kept the ride height the same --- so 275 (same as X5M stock front) was "it". A couple of teaser pics: as soon as these pics were taken the 19" snows on #298 M went back on, and this truck is on a 1,275 mile road trip to NW Montana - tonight! As for looks, does it look that much different from stock because of the squareness? Also, I like your idea of keeping one size so you can rotate tires. Are 275s the widest we can go? Isn't that a little too narrow for the rear since we have 315s stock? Sorry, I still have more questions but I'll give you time to answer these first! Haha

I tried to find a tire size that allowed square but couldn't find 285 or 295's that would work. I'm told 295 will work on the front with stock wheel offsets, and obviously it would be fine in the rear since we have 315 stock. If you find a good all-season 20" 285 or 295 tire for our trucks I'd be very interested I drove my Porsche 997 TT with Michelin PS rubber from Bellingham WA to SoCal a few winters ago and suffered through a lot of snow and ice on I5. I made it, but summer performance tires simply lose a lot of traction as they cool off and aren't very good at all in snow. I suspect the stock X5M tires would be similarly poor in snow but don't know for sure.

The DWS handled our 1-3" snows here with no problem. I wish I could comment of the heavy stuff, but it hasn't happened yet this year.

Oh really? That's good to know. I don't plan on crazy snow plowing but I just want to be safe while cruising through the mountains.

I was quoted $1245 out the door for all four DWS tires mounted and balanced...you guys think that's a good deal?
I guess I could sell my stockers too; $1000 at best?

Tire Rack is $1,058 plus shipping, mounting, & balancing, so $1,245 doesn't look bad to me.

The X5M with such large brakes and goofy hub diameters present limited options for winter tires. Ideally, winter rubber is smaller in diameter and a lot narrower than the 275 & 315 rubber our cars come with. Having 1 set to use all year round on this car will be a compromise. I think the 275/40x20 DWS on all 4 corners will work for us 9-10 months out of the year with the 255x19 Pirelli Scorpion Winter for when the going gets tough. Up here the city often takes 24-48 hours to get the roads plowed so no sheet winter tires are required with AWD.
Having lived in Berkeley for a few years I know what the conditions are like along I-80 into Tahoe. If I were you I'd find a beater set of OEM X5 (not M) 19" wheels (or Tire Racks offering) and get a set of narrow 255 winter tires and put 'em on when going skiing. CHP will give you a chain exemption if you have AWD and winter tires with the snowflake/mountain icon on the sidewall.
