Mein Auto: 325i and X3
Low Gas Mileage

I'm only averaging about 15 miles per gallon and I don't understand why. That's completely city driving with almost no highway at all, but even on long trips I get about 18 mpg.

Vehicle is an 2005 3.0L. Runs perfectly fine. I changed spark plugs, flushed all fluids (except tranny), and changed air filter last month. I only use premium 93 octane gas. Next on my list is to change the fuel filter and perhaps that's the culprit. Anyone else have any idea or similar problem?

That's about right for city only driving. How many miles on it? O2 sensors are due at 100k as well.

Yes it might be right.

Mine gets 24-25 all hwy but the second you add city in the mix, my milage drops to 20-21 mixed.

What is your driving style? On my 128i vert...that was my garage queen...I was getting 16-18 mpg because I was just bopping around town and having FUN...especially at stoplights with the top down. Same engine so your milage isn't surprising.

Now when I occasionally did the long hwy commute to work in her, she would turn 28 mpg all day on the hwy.

I would change the O2 sensors before the fuel filter.

That sounds right for urban driving, and unless you're resetting your Board Computer on the hwy drives, your average is going to get dragged down by the amount of urban driving you do. I'm surprised by the O2 sensoe comments; of course these could be the culprit, but I haven't touched them @ 145k mls (224.300km) and don't plan to unless there is a drastic degradation in drivabilty or consumption.

O2 sensors will trigger a CEL when they fail, but I've read that they start losing "optimal "efficiency after 100k. I still have mine at 125k miles as well but probably will change them before 150,000.

Excellent point!!!

Matter in fact the CARB Gestapo requires the manufacturer to warranty the o2 sensor to 150k if the car has a California emissions tag and sold in California.

I know my 09 service manual says 120k or 150k in California.

Consider yourself a little bit luckier than me, I get 12- 14 all city.From new.

I reset after every fill up, and I typically run each tank until only 20-30 remain. Current mileage on the odometer is 98200. I'm waiting to change O2 sensors at the same time I do the valve cover gasket, which might be this Spring when it warms up.

Don't take my word for it. :-) the manual recommends replacement at 100,000 miles. For 65 bucks a piece and an hour of time I would at least change the 2 pre cat sensors. I changed mine around 130,000 in our 2004 x3. We average 20 mpg around town and saw 26-27 mpg on our last family road trip. It pays for itself in my opinion.

That's about what I get (the signature is like the Fuelly thing in the US, I've been religiously listing every fillup). Obviously the consumption varies based on terrain. I got lower consumption figures back when I lived in Raleigh last year where it's mostly flat in the Piedmont and Sandhills, whereas now I get a lot of downshifting and higher revs in the mountains where I have to work the 2,5 litre.

I need a diesel. My definition of poor consumption is roughly the US equivalent of 20 US mpg in urban driving. I talk to friends about how my X3 is thirsty and they ask what I get.
"Roughly 25-27 US mpg on the hwy".
"That's really good, what are you talking about?"
"I expect 45 US mpg thesedays"

What brand and where did you get them for $65 each? That's really a good price.

Shopped around and Amazon had the best prices. Genuine Bosch direct fitment which are oem replacement.

I know what you mean AzNM about the diesels. A friend of mine has a new vw passat diesel and averages around 45 mpg on the highway. Crazy.

My wife's 07 X3 has about 45,000 on it and when it was new it got around 27 MPG on the highway and around 20 in town. Then a few years ago all of a sudden it dropped to maybe 20 on the highway and about 16 in town. I took it in but the dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong and I just didn't have the time or energy to argue with them. It was strange that it was so sudden and such a major change. It runs and drives perfect and with the little she drives it its not worth the effort. I will however watch this thread to see if anyone gets their mileage to improve and see if it looks solvable.

I am averaging 12 MPG these days driving city only , used to be 14-16 mpg city driving only and that is based on actual total miles driven per tank without tapping into the reserve or with about 15 gallons. @96K miles on my 2004 X3, 3.0L, I just had the originally installed VCG replaced as it was badly leaking. I also got the spark plugs and air filter replaced, plus an oil change. It has been two days now, so lets see if the computer gives me a better reading now that I did the oil change and a tune up. I am looking into changing the gas filter as well as I suspect it was not replaced in the past.

Just to pass on this info, while I was at my Indy shop, the mechanic told me about a 2002 Mercedes needs both of the fuel pump replacement because of the owner's neglect in changing the gas filter. 2002 Mercedes with factory installed gas filter? yes! this may not be the only maintenance the owner overlooked. now it cost 1500 to do all the repair work, since the fuel pumps are in tank.

By the way, @ 100K miles service interval, what fluids need to be changed? Please fill me in on this. My vehicle is running just fine, but I would do the preventative maintenance now, avoid problems and hope fully spend less. Thanks!

I believe the 2.5 X3 gets better mileage than the 3.0 so its important to know which one you are referring to. The OP has a 3.0 but at least one responder (AzN) has a 2.5. FWIW I get about 17 in town and 23-23 on the freeway in my 3.0 with 94K miles on it. I would also check the tire pressure as well it it can cause lower mileage. Good luck!
