Snowboard question?

I'm new to snowboarding, I've gone a few times and and getting better. I'm thinking about buying a board. I'm not sure what board to buy. I really like this Burton Mayhem board. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've always felt that Ride makes better boards. Burton has great advertising, but that comes with the price.


My set-up is a Ride Exile board, Flow bindings (but you may want to try this instead: http://www.ridesnowboards.com/bindin...p?ProductID=41 New toy on the market. I'm trying to get a demo for free at the end of the year as one of my customer's is the mother of the guy who designed it...), and Ride boots. It's fast, cuts hard, has a lot of pop and handles all terrains.

try to find a demo day before you buy. Most shops have them.

I am a snowboarding fiend.

First, what is your style of riding? Do you go to the terrain parks? Do you go straight down the hill? Do you turn alot?

Second, how tall are you? Do you have a big feet? This will determine your board size and width.

I'm going to assume since you are new you are going to be the guy who goes slow and turns alot. Therefore, get a board that is up to your chin, and make sure it isn't a super freestyle board (narrow, super flexable). It has to be wide enough for your feet so that when you turn you don't hit your toes or heels on the snow and fall.

I'm 5'11'' and use a Santa Cruz Seth Huot 155 which is a strict terrain board, its my competition board. My feet are almost too big to fit so I put my bindings set as far back as possible (not up and down the board, but from side to side).

I also got two Burtons, one for and another for back country powder riding. I like burton's the one's I have are stiff and very easy to control.

Hell yeah, flow bindigs are nice, thats what I use. But Ride bindings are going to be amazing, I went riding with Jayson Hale (us snowboarding team), he let me ride a set of Ride's that are coming out next year, woah... get ready for the most amazing bindings ever.

You are on crack.

Ill take my Vermont made Burton over your Chinese Ride any day. Not to mention Burton has been making boards for about 20 years longer than Ride. There is NO comparison.

To the OP, you buy a board based on your size and skill level along with type of riding you do.

Fill us in on your body weight, show size, and what you most want to do with you board.

I don't snowboard, but my buddy who i always ride with does, and he just got a Libtech Skate Bannana. He swears by it. Think's its the greatest thing ever. Just my .02.

LibTechs are great boards made by Mervin Manufacturing here in Seattle, Wa.

They are typically a 1 or 2 season board at best. Though light weight they arent durable.

Ive had at least a half dozen of them over the years.

I'm 5'10'', size 27.0 snowboard boot, I ride as a regular, and I'm riding in a park. I've ridin with a 155 board and i like it.

I'm in a similar position that 5150 was in. Been snowboarding for a few years now, but tend to go only once a year for a week somewhere. I'd say I'm intermediate by now. Don't go super slow, but do tend to turn quite a bit. Trying to wean myself off it. So mostly mountain riding blue trails, with blue terrain park trails. Since it's the end of the season, figured now is a good chance to buy. I haven't looked at what the deals in the stores around here are, but found a guy selling a Head Defiance 152 board with bindings for $50. Says he only used it several times. I've never heard of Head before. Googled it, but didn't find much. Anybody have experiences? Do any boots work with any bindings, or are the boots specific to bindings?

Also, I always forget what size snowboard I get. I'm 5'7. Is that about a 150 board? Or 145?

Why snowboard when you can ski? Unless you prefer going slower than you can on skis.

If I recall you want a board that reaches your chin so measure from there.

For $50 I'm guessing you'll get what you pay for . . .

Yeh, brand new it's about $200 online. Sounds like nobody else here has heard of Head either.

I've heard of Head, they do make skis and tennis racquets, so it's not surprising that they make snowboards too. I bought a Burton after season for about 1/2 price but all together my setup with boots, bindings and board approaches $700 so $50 just sounds like a setup you'd soon want to upgrade.

Is it the same Head that makes tennis racquets?? I love the Head racquets, they're quality.

So can any boots go with any bindings? Or is boot selection dependent on the type of binding?

If they are step in bindings then you need step in boots.

Yes, I know that. Am just making sure that any step in boots work for any step in binding, regardless if the bindings are K2, Head, Burton, or whoever else makes bindings. And the same for the strap bindings.


Speaking of which, any preferences on the type of binding? I've never tried a step in, but it looks like a really good idea. I always hate having to stop and sit and play with the straps to get strapped in. Are step-ins easy to use and really are more convenient? Do step in boots cost more than regular? I assume the bindings also cost more for the perceived convenience...is the price premium worth it?

Well, I own both but am an expert at neither.

Elan Inverse ! One of the lightest boards out there, lots of pop. Flow bindings are garbage for park, no response from them, they are the lazy noobs binding IMO. Anyways next board is going to be a Libtech. 2 cents...

Anybody have a 2010 YES Great Dudes of History board? I've read some reviews, but can't tell if it's a good board for somebody who sticks mostly to blue trails in west-coast powder or east-coast ice.
