autocheck #owner anomaly

Hi All,

In April 2012, I bought a used 2006 BMW using seller's (small old car dealer setup) provided free Autocheck vehicle history report declaring as single owner. Few months back, my friend ran another autocheck report and everything looks fine. However recently, another friend of mine ran carfax against my VIN and found total 3 owners including me. Rest of the vehicle information is fine & no salvage or other title issue whatsoever.

I reached out autocheck and they said they are still seeing only 2 owners as per Texas DMV's including me whereas carfax responded that they are seeing 3 Texas owners from Texas DMV including me. I ran NMVTIS report and it's showing 3 owners matching with carfax info.

Since I haven't purchased either of 2 reports (carfax or autocheck) myself and relied on the free online autocheck report provided by seller; do I have any rights whatsoever to dispute?

I believe autocheck's buy back protection won't apply coz its way past 90 days of vehicle ownership and I didn't purchase report directly from them...any other thoughts to make autocheck take some part of responsibility.....

Thanks a lot!!

I wrote the Autocheck app so I am familiar with this topic. The buy back protection only works if you purchase a Autocheck report/subscription/ect and the car has to qualify for buyback protection. If you run a report on BMW A and it shows clean and you intact purchase the car, you will have to register that vin with the buyback protection. If you fail to register the car or don't purchase the report, you have zero recourse.

As for the data you viewed, it is solely based in the information sources. Autocheck and Carfax use overlapping and also different data sets for their reports. I can guarantee the NO history report can be 100% correct because if it is not reported it does not exist.

One more thing, it is not uncommon for a car to have a single owner, sold to a dealership, sent to auction, and sold at another dealership. In this process, cars may have title transfer which creates a new owner but the "owner" did not actually drive the car other than basic car dealership stuff.
