does it sound like a CPS or a CS problem?

Also is there a special tool for this job?

as you will see from the pictures its pretty straight forward, and you must make sure that it is seated in properly, when i did my VCG on the driver side I had to put some force to get it back in with the new o ring on

Remove those plastic bmw covers from heads first
You'll see 3 sensors there:
One round is valvetronic
2 other ones are cam sensors

i checked everything but could solve the problem. i finally consulted with a bmw mechanic, he asked me to bring the car over for him to check. he hooked up a professional scanner which he called it a euro typed scanner. It indicated that the problem was with the CRANK shaft position senor. He then hooked up the scanner he called Japanese scanner and it showed a camshaft position sensor. So i asked him to replace the crank shaft position sensor and the problem went away. I was not aware of scanners specifically for euro cars versus japanese cars.
