Hi guys, I posted a month ago about how I wanted to plastidip my winter rims on my 335 and I got great input. Well today I finally did it. The process was easy, cheap, and came out great. I recommend anyone to do it if they want a great matte black finish for cheap. Here are some before and after pics.

How did you cover calipers and rotors?

You take the wheels off the car.

Actually I didn't take the rims off. I put plastic bags in between the rims and brakes. I also put index cards (poker cards work too) between the tires and rims. Then I applied a light coat first. I made rounds around the cars and ended up putting 4 coats. I rotated the tires a little bit to get the parts I missed. I had to do it a couple times because my rims are a pain. You may get some on the calipers or rotors but it won't do anything and will come off as you drive and brake. Here's a pic from the set up

I see you have friends to help you out.
![]() I like your idea of using plastic bags. I am in process of doing it myself and didnt want to take rims out. Here is sample of what I got done so far. Its too dark but it was just to test my abilities to paint. I ll probably remove it as I get my rims painted. I will go with your idea of plastic bags. How many spray bottles did you use for rims? And how long did it take to dry? |

I bought 3, but only used 1 and a half bottles. It took about 40 minutes to dry. Make sure you're in a warm place to help dry. The whole process took about an hour and a half.

I think it would have taken about as long if you had taken the wheels off. Any time you paint, powdercoat, chrome or whatever, the key to a good job is surface prep. With the wheels off you can clean 'em thoroughly with degreaser or whatever solvent you prefer, and easily locate and repair any gouges or other defects. Seems a lot more thorough and easier if the wheels are off.

I agree. I just didnt want to deal with that. I got my car washed the day before and then cleaned it a bit before. I didnt wanna kill myself over having them perfectly clean

At least you're car would not have embarrassed the loved ones you left behind if you had killed yourself with perfectly clean wheels.

I still can't believe that someone would refinish their wheels without taking them off the car because you "just didn't want to deal with that" and you "didnt wanna kill myself over having them perfectly clean". That's just the half-assed way. Oh well, your car, your choice. My car, I would never do it that way. I always do things the full-assed way. ![]() Just out of curiosity, did you buy or lease new, or buy used? Show us pictures in six months.

I think it would have been easier to have just take the wheels off. Other than that, it does look nice.

We're talking $15 in plasti dip; the goal is to have it come off easily when the time comes. These are obviously winter wheels. They look great. It's a simple and cheap way to spice up you winter look
