2012 528i
31 average (comfort mode 80% Hwy 20% city) 15000 miles Purchased 93 octane premium from Shell or BP MPG calculation done with calculator - not on car computer which is about 5% optimistic By the way - I tried 89 octane on 3 tanks. Lost about 4% mpg. Considering the 4% extra cost using 89 octane, 93 octane is about the same cost in the end.

I see some folks who question the car's calculated mpg. I seriously doubt if it is off by much at all, and it's likely to be as accurate as using the calculator method. If you calculate by "hand" are you sure your filling up the tank to the same level every time? Have you checked to see if the odometer is accurate?
The reality is that with the current electronics and information supplied on-line they very accurately measure how much fuel is being electronically metered to the engine. I'm sure there could be some variance, but it's very unlikely they are off by more than 1-2%. While I don't use a calculator, I frequently run the numbers in my head, and I've always done it. They aren't off by much.

24 MPG (60% comfort, 35% sport, 3% Eco pro, 2% sport+) 17,000 miles Paid in full ![]() 91 or 93 premium unleaded (10% Ethanol) BP Fuel - Our area has gone all Ethanol...I can definitely tell a difference when I get regular non-Ethanol fuel (better gas mileage and performance)

19.1 mpg 14,900 miles purchased 93, usually Valero I mostly drive in Comfort or Sport with suspension settings only. Dunderhi and German, you are inspirational. Looks like i'm spending to much time in the Starbucks' drive-thru and not enough on the open road. Although open road and northern NJ don't really go together. |

Mine read 4.0 high. I found the below procedure worked to reset the gas MPG computer. 1. Hold down the odometer reset button and turn the ignition on by pushing start/stop button. 2. Release the odometer reset button, and you should see a menu of 4 items on the dashboard. From here on, use the odo-reset button to advance to the next entry through a short press, and to select through a long press. 3. Choose the one that says Unlock through the above, which will take you to a passkey screen. Your passkey is the sum of the last 5 digits of your VIN. Increment the two-digit number until you get to it, and with the long press of the odo button, select it. 4.Then scroll down to correction factor and modify it from 1000 to whatever you require. My car claimed more mpg than it was actually delivering by about 4.0%. I changed the 1000 to 1040 and it now seems about right. If your trip computer reads higher than true figures worked out, make the correction over 1,000. If your trip under reads, make the correction number under 1,000.

The '535d' they are bringing to the states will actually be equipped with the engine the rest of the world would find in a 530d. Still nice, but not the real deal... |

The 535d is more refined, especially when cold. And with the 8 speed you are never in the wrong gear. I guess you aren't getting the 535d because of the cost. Here in Oz they are only about 10% cheaper than a 550i and are dearer than the 535i despite the tax concession. They have to recover their r&d costs I guess whereas the 530d r&d costs would have been well and truly recovered considering how many years that engine has been in service. Sorry for going OT Sent from my GT-I9305 using BimmerApp mobile app Last edited by Oz 535d; 04-28-2013 at 01:55 PM. |
