An auto 316?
Don't bother. Enjoy the fuel mileage and work on handling and braking instead. There are motorcycles with bigger engines. Sent from my LG Revolution 4G using BimmerApp

Seriously. Do not waste money trying to add power to a 316 auto.

Lolll guys i know, but i thought that can make some extra power in a cheap way, so the only way is to do an engine swap, right?

I think you're looking for a reflash, not a chip.

It's having your car's computer reset to a usually different standard.

On older cars and the M50 BMWs, the fuel maps and other engine control data are hard coded onto a removable EPROM chip. Simply pop out the chip and put a new one with different parameters and your engine program is different from
Newer OBDII cars don't have these removable chips. Instead you plug a unit into the OBDII port and it will upload the new programming to the DME. This is called a reflash. Sent from my Galaxy Tab using BimmerApp

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eeprom
The term comes from regular EPROM, which required a flash of UV light to reprogram. The EEPROM does this electronically, but the term stuck. Your Engine Control Unit has an EEPROM that stores timing information for the car. You can 'reflash' it to get a boost of power with properly programmed timing info. "Today I Learned..."

I always thought EPROM was electronically erasable, I've never even heard of wiping a chip with UV like that.
Interesting.... Sent from my LG Revolution 4G using BimmerApp

Yea it's pretty awesome. We learned how to do it at Virginia Tech, then the professor let us use EEPROMs, which you just stuck into a special circuit that would do it all really easy. "Gotta learn to crawl before you can walk, bitches!" - Our TA.
Most complex circuits with an EEPROM were designed with the flashing circuitry built in, so the engineers could reprogram the chips without removing them. This is what we have in our cars.

Ill have to look it up to wrap my head around it. thanks for the info.
So what your basically telling me is that the EEprom reflash is just as good as buying a new chip?? |

I'm saying that the chip in your car is not removable. Buying a new chip is a waste of money. What you really need to buy is a reflash. (Example) Usually they're sold with the equipment you need to hook it up to the connector inside the engine bay that allows you to reprogram your ECU.
You wouldn't buy new rollerblade wheels for your ice skates, would you? If so, I have some awesome ones you can buy...

Man it's definitely been a while. I'm fooling thinking that I can suggest a chip for an OBDII car.
