Audi pulls ahead of BMW

With this capability, the ability to have your car do all the driving is here.

There's time yet for autopilotless vehicles to share the road, but the transition begins.

BMW? So far as hapless consumers know, they'll be playin' "catch up" on this.

On another note, anyone know how to use a slide rule?

I guess you haven't seen Jeremy Clarkson ride around the Top Gear track in 2007 in an E90 330i that drives itself going up to 100 mph.

I dont know about you, but I even feel uncomfortable with a car that parks itself never mind one that is going to drive me around at 70 MPH.

so audi pulls ahead of BMW in the section where people dont actually drive the car. makes sense I guess.

I have used log tables. Slide rules are advanced.

This sounds perfect for Audi and not for BMW. Although now that Audi has done it, BMW is sure to follow suit.

That car wasn't actually navigating the parking garage by itself. The garage was outfitted with sensors that fed data to the car to allow it to navigate.

Electromagnetic lane markers are the future, maybe hybrid RFID's. Cheap & required by law.

BMW has been there and done that....four years ago.

Nope. Cheap for a parking garage demo, as opposed to a car that can intelligently navigate, absolutely. Cheap to cover and maintain the US infrastructure, or the WORLD's infrastructure? Not a chance. Given all of the research going into self navigating cars by large players, it will happen. The DARPA sponsored competition alone has produced great results. Either way, cars will self navigate in the future and it won't be relying on a bunch of sensors covering every road on the planet.

Far less expensive than we might imagine. $0.15 RFID chips glued or embedded every so often. Dang things can be printed.

And now that $1.50 wholly contained radar on a chip's been developed, much can change.....looking forward t'scoring those myself!
