thinking about buying..help please

Hey guys,

I plan on adding another BMW to the family this week. I have access to a few different 7 series models. I have been hearing from people that around the 2003 year model, there are all kinds of common problems. some associated with electrical issues, and others with the control system and all its menus.

I am hoping to get some insight as to which direction to go. I have 4 choices.

1) 2003 745 il 120k miles

2) 1998 740 il 154k miles

3) 2001 740 il 139k miles

4) 2000 740 il 109k miles

all 4 appear to be in good condition. Allegedly everything works on all models. So which of these has been known to have the least bugs / issues? Help greatly appreciated. Ifanyone has specific knowledge about what I should be looking for, please post.

there are also a few 5 series on the lot, but I think I want a 7 series.

If I had to pick I would get the 03 one if you have hte money to spare if anything needs sorting. If its too cheap, theres probably a reason.

To be fair I haven't had any serious electrical issues in my old 03 745i or my new 02 745i but I hear they do happen.

The main reason I would get that one is that I love the e65 and don't like the interior on the older models.

thanks for the reply. I know what you mean. The body style on the 03 is a lot nicer imo, and it stayed pretty much the same until 09, so you still have way more of a "new car" effect with it. The 01 is about half the price of the 03. I am not sure why. I think it is for the reason I just mentioned.

obviously, they are all really nice cars. A lot nicer than my 95 325 ic. I am pretty sure that I will be happy with any of them. I am just a little concerned about all the issues I have heard come with the car. Has anyone had a major issues with their cars?

what can I expect?

I'm not sure if you're buying your 1st 7 series but trying to buy a 7 series with a 100k + is not the best investment "IMO". Most of us who still have 745's bought them while they still had low miles. If I were you an I had cash to buy one I would use the cash as a down payment on a newer 7 or something else. After a 100k on these cars things tend to break a lot more an leak from everywhere( depending on prior owner). If you really want to enjoy your ride an save on sooner than you think repairs keep looking at maybe 06- 08 750's. The 750's have a newer look with less issues than its predecessor(745). Best Of Luck though.

WOW, you are a really positive dude huh? Imagine if I just saved up as much money as I could for 6 months to finally buy a 7 series and that was all I could afford. Comments like those would have really made me feel super great about myself.

Luckily, I can wipe my a55 with the cost of the car. Still though, no need to be such a tool.

What I have read says the 2002-2008 cars have electrical issues, as well as some other problems.. Apparently though, the car will either have them, or not, and you would know long before 100k.

so what you are telling me is that BMW's flagship car has issues at 100k even though I have been driving bmw's into the 200k range since high school? i own a little 325 which now has 200k on it, and it still drives great and the ac is still cold. I am hoping that the Germans stepped it up and did the right thing.

any other issues that are common? what about with the 2001? other than the body style change, are there any major differences?

YES at 100k miles you are looking at problems! As far as electrical problems goes, I don't know what people mean by that. I have never seen a 7 series with electrical problems. I have heard years ago when the E65/66 1st came out it was referred to as a car with electrical issues (by those who never actually owned one). These cars are not the easiest to maintain especially after 100k+ miles on them. If you think you can handle it go for it but expect to pay 7k-10k on the car an within a few months an additional 3k - 5k in repairs. No one is being hard but we can almost predict your future. You will be posting what does this mean, how much do this cost etc. If you want a piece of mind look at 06- 08's. After the purchase of the 745 an the repairs within your 1st year you could have had a newer looking ride with fewer issue an that biggest thing called "A Piece Of Mind".

Im sure your e30 325 made it to the 200's, the 740 or the 745 will not. Ive owned them all including 2 e38's a 00 and an 01 and both tranny's went right at 100k. If you can indeed wipe your ass with the cost of the car which i dont doubt with over 100k than its a cool cheap car but dont be upset when it need 5k worth of repairs in the 1st year. and the trans is slipping And your welcome.

Listen, I bought an 02 745i with 120K in january of last year for around 10k, first year i spent 4k.
1Kish for IPod integration (new dash screen aka MMI, Ipod kit, new glove button trim cover, some programming)
350 for a new 3d nav (this didnt NEED to be replaced I did this by choice)
350 for a working L7 amp on ebay (my old one was dead)
replaced alternator for 650ish , parking brake, all cooling hoses and the tank/cap, oil changes, brakes, spark plugs, air filters, cabin air filters, VCG, oil pressure switch***, got a matching spare tire, etc etc to clean her up. all together came to about 4K.
Anyways, now I am at 146500 (I drive a lot) No MIL No leaks. If you buy one of these cars with over 100K just be well aware you will need some money aside for maintenance repairs because chances are the PO is selling to avoid the costs.
Could I have bought a newer one for 14K? probably. but then again I may have had to fix the same things or possibly more

all points well taken and thank you. I am truly a rookie when it comes to the 7 series. I actually just went through this whole thing with a Porsche 928 I bought,

anyway, so I guess I shouldnt buy a 7 series? They are actually at a dealership, and seem to be well cared for. Of course they more than likely came from an auction. Who knows what its rel history is. I am kind of bummed. I really wanted to buy a 7 series tomorrow.

I have seen so many good writeups on the 2001 and 2003 about how great a performer it is. problems are mentioned a lot.

I am thinking that maybe I will pick up the 2001 which is almost 1/2 the price of the 2003. Different body style, but maybe more reliable?

thanks again guys,
