Indy mech vs Dealer mech

Never thought about it like this but if you take you car to the Indy will the car fax actually get updated with the maint that was completed? Or does that only happen when you take it to the dealer? Thanks guys.

It depends on the indy mechanic.

Some may report, some may not.

Thanks pinecone. I figured that. Funny thing is all the years I've looked other car faxes have the BMW dealers name. Funny that they don't update it so the only way to see a cars full history is if it was taken to the dealership.

What is in it for them to report?

It takes time and time is money.

@pinecone im just trying to figure out the best way for to look up the maint history. If i buy a brand new car and get the first oil change done at the dealer and for the next 5 years get maint done at an Indy Mech then if someone pulls the car fax its only going to show the first oil change? If always had ext warranties on my used cars but i keep my maint files, but never have i called about how the car was when i owned it. And I have never seen a previous owners maint records in a glove box. I just noticed that alot of people say go to the INDY because its cheaper but i guess the best bet is to get the car checked out, get a ext warranty if you need to and roll the dice like any other car.

Exactly. But some people DO have maintenance records.

I do most of my own oil changes (I only let someone else do the free ones ). So I just make a record of the date and mileage of each one.

But any service that I take it in for, I keep the invoice in my file for that car.

@pinecone. we are on the same page. Im saying after you car goes through a used car lot or a few auctions, and I see it and want to buy it i dont have access to your maint files from your glove box nor will all that love you showed the car be viewable to me. No matter what the inspection and warranty is the important. Now lets burn a lil rubber

Which is why I don't buy older cars from dealers.
