Who's got the most miles on their E70 X5?
Curious how many have more than 100,000 miles on their X5? Anybody over 150,000 miles?
How has the long term reliability been? What was your most expensive repair? |

it is not my experience, but... currently there is X5 30d for sale on mobile.de (German trading portal) with ca. 400k km. The other day I saw X5d with 600k km

Autotrader
I was looking at that Autotrader X5 and said WOW, $42,000 for a X5 with 164,000 miles, these cars hold their value great! However, when you read the small print the actual mileage is 16,400...
Nobody here on Bimmerfest with over 100,000 miles? |

I just traded in my '07 4.8 with 130,000 miles.
I picked up a 2010 and lesson I learned is not to have this car out of warranty and sell it by 75k miles or keep forever. |

Are you talking about loss in resale value?

First off, yes I was talking about resale. The value was dropping fast when I got onto 100k, and rightfully so. At one point I went to KBB.com and put in all the data for my car and then increased the mileage entry by a few thousand at a time and you can see the impact.
And yes, I was having enough issues where upgrading to one in warranty seemed like a better option financially. Cost me about $5k out of pocket and $85/month more for the newer car, but the repairs coming were going to be significant. Major issues really started about a year ago (maybe 115k mikes) when I was getting a bad shift from 5-6. Took to dealer, they wanted a ****-ton to fix the sleeve plus an oil leak (can't remember where). So found a reputable independent and took it there- same diagnosis. So spent the money and the tranny issue was gone, but I started burning oil. Now I know it's common on the 4.8's, but I never had an issue before. So this was a change. Sometimes I'd go through a quart a week other times it would take 3 weeks. Worse part was if I idled for a few minutes, as soon as I'd pull away or rev, It would throw out so much smoke it was like I was in a Cheech and Chong movie. Went back to shop multiple times and he was convinced there was no connection and was just the seals getting old. He put thicker ok in The last leg was a cross-country trip from MD to CO towing a Honda Accord. Both vehicles packed w Christmas presents. 80 mph towing a car was a bit of a strain... ![]() Issues w the car at trade-in: motor burning oil, auto leveling suspension air bags shot (car would be sitting way low in am), driver side front suspension clunk (can't remember what it was), needed rear pads and discs (just put on front myself). The interior had cracks in most of wood trim. The Bluetooth would not connect occasionally. I also had to replace the water pump at about 90k and I was starting to hear that same pulley rattle again. Prior to warranty running out, dealer replaced passenger seat (heater broke), entertainment/nav computer, screen, DVD drive for nav, and the steering wheel trim ![]() I suspect the car was not well cared for by its first owner, plus it was an early build for the E70. And here I am again with a newer one. This time I opted for the 6 cylinder because I was horrified by what I was paying at the pump. The 2010 seems much more refined, plus I searched across the country and found 93.352% of the options I was looking for in the new used car I'm tired of typing on an iPad.

jmiller, thanks for your post. Would you say that the most of the costly repairs started to happen after 100,000 miles? Interested as I am debating if I should get an extended warranty.
All my prior vehicles have developed their major issues way after the 100,000 mile mark, so right now not planning on getting an extended warranty. Unless someone would offer one up to 200,000 miles

My experience is that there are no repairs that don't cost a lot on this car. Even oil changes cost too much, although 9 quarts of synthetic do add up...
I'm was doing a lot more on my own w the 2007. I was going to do the suspension myself, but as far as the electronics I'm lost. I sell for a top 5 software company in the real world and every time I start the car I'm thrilled when the mainframe on wheels turns off all the warning lights. But I digress, to answer your question I personally won't have this car without the warranty. The 2010 is CPO so warranty to 100. I'm going to keep a close eye on value and state of the car and either sell at 80-90k or keep forever. And if I keep it it will have to be a situation where maintenance/repairs are less than a car pmt. that's just my two cents. |

It seems that the main issues that have been cropping up on the earlier models are
1. Steering wheel trim/light switch trim peeling 2. DVD drive failing (CCC navigation) These two I have had myself, fixed under warranty. 3. It seems that the electric water pump is a common failuer too, post 60k miles. 4. The airbags for the self levelling suspension seem to fail, but I'm not sure of how common that problem is 5. The most recent one ofcoouse being the EGR cooler cracking and diesel fumes leaking into the cabin. I am sure there will be more as the vehicles age.

Hello...I currently have 147,000 miles on my '07 x5 3.0. My first big issue dollar wise was the sway bar actuator, which was replaced under warranty. Many thanks to the discussions here on the 'fest, as someone else was having that slight clunking noise from the front end at low speeds. This gave me the knowledge to direct them to this (they were very suprised that I called that out). My other big issue was the evaporater. I got lucky on this one as well. This was replaced out of warranty under a goodwill repair, and only cost me $500. This part had to be repaced again at around 65k miles though (but luckily under the 2 year extended warranty on that part). The X5 has been excellent the last 70,000 miles, with the only thing done being maintainence items, and the water pump, which I would also consider a maintainence item at this mileage. I drive very conservatively (I can count on one hand the times I have hit the pedal to the boards). the car drives a little looser than it did a few years ago, which is understandable. I have a friend who has an RX variety Lexus, and our vehicles are night and day difference. I realize that the X5 is in a different class as compared to the Lexus RX330, but her interior is pretty much falling apart at the same mileage, and mine is still very respectable. Not to mention her drive quality is non-existant. I will report back at 200,000
. It might be awhile, since the 328i picks up a little more than half of my miles driven these days.

My 35d will be going out of warranty this October. While I am typically not one for buying extended warranties for anything, and have never bought an extended warranty for a vehicle, I've come to the conclusion that I either need to get rid of my X5 this Fall or buy an extended BMW warranty. The combination of poor reliability and high cost of repairs, accentuated by BMW NA's continued efforts to limit access to technical data, discouraging independents and DIYers, has convinced me that owning a BMW out of warranty is not wise.
That said, I own a 2004 Z4, with 35K on it, out of warranty, and expect I will soon have to drop $2,500 or thereabouts to get the electric steering replaced due to "stiction" getting worse every year. This is a documented and well-known design flaw, but I doubt BMW is gonna want to provide any help since the vehicle is so old. But, since it is a know quality defect and I am the original owner, I'll go ahead and ask -- no harm in asking if they might provide a break on the parts or something. Sometimes BMW NA can be obstinate on the smallest things, and other times rather generous. The Z4 steering problem on the first generation is so common, they might actually have a written policy in the system... |

I got 2010 with 96k miles on it, picked up Feb 2010, just past 3 yrs. Overall very happy with the truck. Two major issues are EGR cooler replaced at 79k, parts was covered under the warranty, paid for the labor and cabin filters. Active tank temperature sensor fault - just got informed that BMWNA is agree to replace the active tank under the warranty. I purchased maintenance plan up to 100k, so only other out of the pocket expense was the tag light for around $40.00, and 1 1/2 set of tires. first set of Bridgestone lasted 48k miles. Try Micheline on the 2nd set. back tire only lasted 27k miles. With 96k, the front two are still ok. not sure why Bridgestone are fairly even wear on front and back, but Micheline rear one are wearing out twice as fast.
Front brake pad replaced around 45k, rear pad around 52k. I am due for front brake again, and possible rear before 100k. anyone else has experience if dealer will flush the coolant, and brake fluid under the 100k maintenance plan. I didn't flush my transmission fluid around 60k, so not sure yet if I want to have them do it around 100k . With almost 100k, the car still drives like new and tight. One of my concern for keeping the car beyond the 100k will be the emission related repair. I was lucky to have two emission related issue covered under the warranty, even though my warranty was expired.. I am sure I will have to pay for them next time. |

Hello Plutogogo...They will do the transmission service at 100k, but you have to ask for it (at least I had to). My SA actually had to verify this with the shop foreman, as she was pretty much clueless on this. As far as the brake fluid, all depends if it is needed through the CBS system.

Nav screen, passenger seat cover, all emission vapor lines and canister and dmtl pump, 2 Navigation dvd players, various drivability issues, fuel level meters (just had done again under recall), sunroof leak that flooded the passenger side, AC has been recharged twice and they can not find a leak, secondary cats replaced with the whole exhaust since one of the cats internals came apart and was rattling(goodwill repair), water pump and t/stat failure requiring tow just out of warranty(goodwill repair), constant rear hatch creaking in the cold and no amount of adjustment will fix. Just put in a new radiator and in tank fuel pump. New problem now is the car will not start 1 out of 10 times now and probably needs a vanos eccentric shaft sensor or the whole shaft and I have been told to grab my ankles for this repair. I do most of my own maintainance so that is not to bad, but the ride is starting to degrade and the cost of the shocks is just rediculous at around $1400 not including install or the front bearing plates or rear shock mounts. Bilstein is the only aftermarket solution at $900 for a set but I would have to import them and hope they are correct. Drivers side powere window motor starting to slow so it is probably getting ready to fail. Reasale on this thing is just as bad as any other highline vehical with a lot of miles. No dealer within 250 miles on wants it, won't even appraise it. Highest bid I have had for it was at Carmax for $23k when it had 68k miles on it.
The techs are like, "dude, you got the bad one".
