I thought it was the wrong cable.
Ive contacted the seller to see if they can refund or replace it.

Nothing i can do to make this cable work without additional hardware though?

Buy this adapter additional to your existing cable:

This solution is pretty flexible, will work with any model from 1998. You might run into a car which needs the female-male OBD2 adapter what this kit doesn't contain.


2nd option

buy the cable pshovest suggested and buy the additional adapter above.

this will work with your father's car, but not on newer models with D-Can

What models will need the male/female connector? Knowing our luck we will need it!

As i say just 4 wires to obd socket in car.

2nd solution works also with F series, the 1st doesn't.

Just bought the 20 pin connector got a red light on lead but it still wont work!
It wont work with monoscan either...

My third solution definitely works on a 98 528i

But the setup is not easy. Especially on a 64bit machine.
You have to change some settings for the com port.
Some people say, not all of the usb-serial chipset works with Inpa.

Read a lot about the setup before ordering a new cable.

Can somebody help me out please i need to synch dme to ews using inpa. Ppl say it takes couple mins but i cant find step by step instructions. I have code 2737 ( tamper protection) replaced watercooled alternator/starter/ and integrated supply module, i appreciate all the info. Dont really want to tow the car to the dealer

I bought the program and have everything running on a dell d610 I ran a full diagnostic with carsoft and tomorrow will be trying inpa, I will post back.

Is there any software that runs under windows to read and write odometer values for BMW?

For Exx Chassis (E60), you need a K+DCAN USB Interface like this:

I am not sure what to use to register the Battery though. Maybe Tool32 or INPA, and possibly NCS Expert.

There was A LOT of research and set-up, in addition to the required hardware, needed to program/register my battery. It was some time ago but this thread provided a solid base. Good luck!

I'm trying to make sense of the basics of this. Is this suite basically a cheaper version of the Bavarian Technic tool and software? I'm guessing functionalities are basically the same (albeit the interface on the bav tech one looks better). I'm looking for a better BMW specific diagnostic tool other than a generic OBDII reader and I guess deciding between this and getting the Bav Tech software/adapter.

Part 1. Installation of windows Xp
Make sure you have Partitioned your hard drive before you start

Right about now you are thinking you're screwed because you can't boot to windows 7 anymore but now install EasyBCD 2.2 and you can edit the boot menu for dual boot. Try to boot into windows 7 you realize that it the boot path is corrupt and it won't boot. So insert the recovery CD it will do its magic and now you can Dual boot into Windows 7 or windows XP

Part 2 Installation of INPA
Step 1
Install INPA. What is very important is that you only install the first 2 check marks! I will get back to this but you must do this!

Step 2
Change the Path Be careful double check whether windows xp is C drive or D drive this tricked me up



Step 3
Now Run OBD and you will realize that some have the same values so you have to go into the registry and Edit some registry and also add some.


Step 4
Now you have to install the FTDI drivers


Step 5
Now Attach your K+DCAN OBD2 adapter your computer won't find any drivers So it will ask if you want to install them yourself say yes.

Step 6
Choose it yourself and find FTDI Port.cat

Step 7
It should pop up under the device Manager as COMx go into the properties and change it to COM1

Step 8
Download OBD.INI, This is major and you need to put it in Windows Folder


Step 9
Now make sure it works when you attach the OBD2 USB, Inpa will say Ignition on even though its not attached.

Step 10
Now install the other software in parts. For some reason if I tried to install to many at once it would fail

Now everything should be working smooth you might wonder why windows XP doesn't have WIFI simple go into windows 7 and download the drivers for your computer restart into Windows Xp and install the drivers.

You're in an E39 forum here & E39s do not register the battery to the car. So folks here are unlikely to be familiar with the quirks of this procedure in an E60.

You're more likely to find help in this forum devoted to BMW software.
