Question Replaced DDE

So I get an email from my SA that they are now replacing the Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE).

Long story short, this past weekend I noticed via iDrive that the "Engine Oil was Too High." I checked manually with the dispstick and it was slightly over. Bring to the dealer and they adjust the oil level, but car was still showing the message in iDrive. They replace the oil sensor, but still same message. Next step is to replace the DDE as per PUMA.

I do not have the codes (sorry Ard ), but how concerned should I be that the DDE is being replaced? Car is 2.4 yrs w/21K, and other than recalls, has been great. I'm now a bit nervous Pandora's Box has been open and I'll end up getting excessive battery drain or other electronic gremlins...The car has been at the dealer since Monday.

i guess I'd be more annoyed than concerned...unlike engine parts, mechanical assemblies, seals, etc, the DDE (DME in gassers) is either 'connected right' or not.

I could see them replacing the DDE, getting it proigrammed, STILL have the error...and the tech, in utter desperation- becuase HE told puma there was nothing wrong with the sensor or wiring- finally gets down to it and really troubleshoots every connection, all on the QT never telling BMW. Gets it fixed, and reports "the DDE did it"...

I would not be concerned with the battery discharge issue- that has never been attributed ti the DDE. Usually another bad module on the busses.

I must have mistaken the DDE as being a major issue if replaced. I'm eagerly awaiting the email from my SA this afternoon to see if it worked.

So I get a VM from my SA, telling me the new DDE they ordered is not responding after programming, but that the old DDE does repond They think the new DDE from BMW is defective, so they will be ordering a new one and trying again.

IDK why, but I feel like this is the beginning of the end....

Why does this matter?
CAUSE EVERY TIME someone says Lexus has better build quality, one should consider what Toyota their Lexus Engine and chassis platform comes out of and how long that part has been tested in the real world!

Eh, dealer is not very good, IMO

I'll bet the 'story' changes to 'we are doing some other stuff' or "puma wants us to try...' or something OTHER than we ordered another!

BMW under a PUMA has to approve everything, and I've GOT to think puma will want them to check a few things and re-try programming prior to returning a big $$$ item. The dealer probably just ran out of time, and will work on this next week- tuesday? - after the crush of Monday cars is done.

Programming all the modules in the right order, with the right settings is a total PITA. And while it is hooked up to a computer programming they do a brake job or other work- so they tend not to get back to the car immediately. As a result these things stretch out.

They dont like to be honest, so they make up half-stories. "We need to order another $4000 DDE" Right.

Dont know what to tell you....

Day 7....
They installed another DDE and finished programming the car. They checked my other issues besides the initial overfilled oil (e.g., diesel smell in cabin; parking brake) and everything looked resolved. They go and start the car, and it won't start. They received a DEF message saying the car had no fluid and would not start (car obviously has DEF).

WTH is going on...

Day 8....
Finally we have "Dieter" back in the stable. Good thing, as my wife was becoming bored with the champagne over beige 528xi and missed her diesel!

Apparently, the fix was having the car programmed directly by BMW ("IRAP"). Here is how the invoice item reads:
"Owner states the engine oil is overfilled. Showing in idrive. Verified oil level shows too high. Checked oil level with dipstick found oil is at correct level [I begged to differ--it was slightly over, but probably not enough to trigger the sensor]. Ran vehicle test with charger attached. Found no faults. Ran test plan for oil level sender. Found oil level sender is faulty. Replaced sensor oil level now reads too high. Checked lines between DDE ADN sensor. No faults found. Checked plug connection at the DDE, no corrosion is found. Lines are not shorted together. Started TC case for DDE replacement. TC instructed to replace DDE.

Replaced DDE and programmed. Vehicle will not start showing DEF level at zero. Ran test plans for DEF level. Still not starting. PUMA instruct to IRAP. IRAP complete and DEF level now correct and vehicle runs. Oil level reads correct. Reconnected and quick delete faults."

Hopefully we'll have a few more uneventful years before deciding to sell or purchasing an extended warranty.

CONGRATS ON HAVING YOUR DIETER BACK.

My mind struggles to understand what retail value these vehicles will have once the warranty is up, and all owners are left on figuring out how to maintain them. The number of failsafe/prevention programming is enormous. Couple that in with the fact that diagnostic tools are IP of BMW group, let the costs run sky high lol

But I do rant lol

I second the congrats on getting him back.

I am a bit more sanguine about the risks as these cars leave warranty... I think several things will happen, and have happened with other models, other marques:

1. DIYers develop a very detailed 'electronic rolodex' of symptoms/techniques/repairs. Bimmerfest will be one, xoutpost another. Owners, especially when faced with paying, start getting pretty ingenious with repairs. They dont follow the dealership advice of "oh, we just replace the whole engine instead of replacing the spark plugs" approach (you know what I mean, BMWNA may declare a part 'irrepairable', yet the diyers figure out that 4 o rings and make a gasket, and that $4400 VANOS can be easily rebuilt.) Also, guys that buy these cars new are a whole differnet cat than those that buy 3,4 year old cars at 40-50% of new!

2. BMW will fix software and programming as the model ages and as the true range of component variation is discovered. A lot of the reprogramming I see is likely due to BMW figuring out these systems. I suspect that Dieter's issue was some stupid 'how the modules interact' or 'we discovered the new code in the XYZ caused the order of module programming to need to be altered'... maybe as a result the NEXT roll out will have a new way so this is avoided...

(or not, this is BMW after all!)

3. BMW is required to make these tools available. yes they are pricey now, but they WILL be hacked. Look at the cost of a GT1 years ago, now you can buy a cable for $20 and download the code for free.

Engine Oil Level To High

So, my wife got a "Left Brake Lamp Malfunction!" warning light today. This prompted her to look at the Vehicle Status and she noted there was an "Engine Oil Level To High" warning. See oil related photos attached.

We confirmed there is indeed a blown brake lamp on the left side. Very nice heads up, much better than getting pulled over for a burned out lamp warning/ticket or potentially failing an inspection. This is an easy fix.

Biggest concern to me is the "Engine Oil Level to High" warning. You do not even see this information unless you look at Vehicle Status page in I Drive, there is no other clue

I had performed my first DIY oil change on this X5 about 1 month and 1200 miles ago, and carefully filled the oil using the dip stick as guidance. When I filled the oil it was slightly above the top ring, just touching the word MAX on the stick. I also monitored to oil level via the I Drive on that day and for several weeks; alway indicated full / green status.

Questions:

Looking at the dip stick level, should I be concerned? The now darker oil does seem to cover the word "MAX" on the stick. Realize I have driven this vehicle for 1200 miles since the oil change.

Should I check for codes?


A funny thing. . . just this morning I ordered a WiFi dongle for the Carly/BMW app. So I can't yet check for codes myself. Well, I wanted to take this to a local Indy to get a look at the Drive Shaft.

I am in the same exact boat as you, DIY oil change, didnt add last liter till it settled warmed up and checked level via dip and iDrive, was 1L low, so added the last one. Sometime later I noticed in the iDrive it said oil was over max, dipstick shows it just below the max mark. Thinking the level sender is bad. Been meaning to call my SA to schedule an appt as its CPO.
