Computer glitch re oil level...2011 X3 3.5
Hello all: My first real issue with the car at 20,000 miles although an annoyance and curious if anyone else has seen this...started the car...where the normal service message was 13,000 miles to oil change or 4/13 ( anniversary date ) it now said 2300 miles or 9/14. i clicked over to vehicle info and it tells me it is not monitoring the oil level and I should have it fixed at my next oil change which the computer arbitrarily put at 2300 miles.
I stopped, restarted and received the same message. The car sat overnight and same this am. Anyone else experience this identical scenario? I am comtemplating taking it in now as i like to know what my oil level is. I am the same guy who complained about the whomping tire noise from the run flats which is the only thing I don't like about my car! Steve |

At times like this I miss the dipstick... I had pretty much the same scenario, which came up not too long after an oil change. If you're more comfortable letting the dealer deal with it then bring it in now. If you think that it's a spurious error and want to try clearing it yourself then press the radio volume button and hold it down for about 30 seconds. That should cause the computer to reboot, and the message should clear. If it doesn't, or if it comes back, then it's time for a visit to the dealer.

That is the first I have heard of this
If I were to try that would I lose all of my current settings and have to go through loading them in again, including radio stations?

I didn't lose my current settings. All of my radio stations are still there. All of my destinations are still there. I didn't check the seat settings, as I'm the only one who ever drives it other than the occasional valet.

I have the same issue. I rebooted per above and it made no difference. Have not gone to dealer yet though.

Same thing
I tried to reboot per the suggestion and same thing...no change. Rallye motors this Friday.

Please post back how you made out and what they did. Mine went about two weeks ago and I will not be able to get to dealer until March.
I suspect sensor is gone due to cold weather we had a few weeks ago and excess humidity in the oil (not enough highway driving). This was the issue with my E90 where the sensor would stop reading properly whenever I had many short starts in cold weather. It got annoying after the third sensor in my first year (!). Luckily, once I had 30,000 miles on the vehicle I had no issues for the next three years. I understand this might just be a software issue though. Here's hoping. |

I don't know
Most of my trips in the car are on highway at fairly high speeds so the engine is fully warmed up. Also synthetic oil really doesn't pick up much water.
I think it is a software glitch. The dealer told me I had to wait because it can be fixed in an hour so I suspect I am not the first customer with this complaint. It is ironic as i was just commenting to someone how trouble free the car has been. Thanks, Steve |

Strange that it wouldn't have shown up before now but I guess s/w can do funny things (e.g. triggered by elapsed time or mileage).

Crazy car fixed itself
I got into it last night and it was back to normal with the correct next service date and it measured the oil. Crazy. Guess I will cancel my appointment as they have nothing to look at!

Unless there is some fault logged.

same sensor error, now fixed
My 2011 did the same thing at 20k miles, and the dealer FINALLY installed the new software that completely changed the car - no more hesitation, I love my car now! Apparently an update was needed. Unfortunely, my turn signals would not shut off once the steering wheel returned to center, so after a few attempts to fix it, they replaced the unit.
