One fog light working
I didn't know if the issue is intentional, but running the lights automated runs only one fog light on my Xd. Once I switch it manually and activate the fog lights, both turn on. Anyone else notice this or experienced the same situation?

I have the same thing. Usually its my driver side light. Occasionally its the opposite. I have my first service coming up, was going to ask about it then. BTW, I have a '12 X535d

It could be the adaptive lighting. It turns on the fog in the direction you are turning in and the off. It's annoying, but normal. And many people will tell you that you have a light out, which you'll get sick of explaining.

I thought the same thing when I first bought our X5.

Like how some cars have dedicated cornering bulbs, the BMW illuminates the fog lamp for the direction you're turning. I think I've seen the same on Nissan/Infiniti cars.

One fog light lights up when you have your signal blinkers on as well. As others mentioned, the fog light turns on also in the direction you are turning to provide more illumination at night.

Interesting as both my fogs will illuminate when I put the vehicle into reverse.

I noticed that both fog lights comes on when in reverse at night as well. And each side individually when signalling or if the steering wheel is turned when not moving or moving slowly.

If You are backing out straight, both fogs should activate If you are changing the angle of the steering wheel the fogs should activate If you have the turn signal on, the individual fogs will turn on indicated direction. However if you are simply turn the switch to auto, and one fog illuminates, then thats an issue you should bring up at your next service appointment.

The ifs are the situations where ur fogs should activate. Are you describing in ur op any one of the situations?
If yes then normal, but if ur talking about, the vehicle sitting, in park, steering wheel centered, turn signal off, and headlights in auto and only one fog illuminates that's not normal lol

If~
Your wheels are pointed straight AND your switch is set to Auto AND you don't have a turn signal one (not caution blinkers) AND you don't have the wheel turned AND you're not in reverse AND you do not have fog lights manually turned on If all of the above is true, the fog lights should not come on.

Did they stop shipping owners manuals with X5's? This is all explained on page 112 of my 2011's manual.

And so it is:
Adaptive light control* The concept Adaptive light control is a variable headlamp control system that enables dynamic illumination of the road surface. Depending on the steering angle and other parameters, the light from the headlamp follows the course of the road. In sharp curves, e.g. serpentines, or during turning, up to a certain speed one of the two front fog lamps* is switched on as a turning lamp. This provides improved illumination of the area inside the curve. Controls Activating Switch position with the ignition switched on. The turning lamps are automatically switched on depending on the steering angle or the use of turn signals. Standstill function*: to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adaptive Light Control directs light towards the front passenger side when the vehicle is at a standstill. When driving in reverse, both turning lamps are active. I also remember reading this feature can be turned off by coding the vehicle.
