E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

Weird engine noise, thoughts?

Any thoughts? Worst at start up. Click image for video.

The high pitched squealing noises sound like maybe the belts and tensioners/pulleys. Did you check them?

Bad tensioner pulley, bad alternator bearing or fan blade clipping the fan shroud.

Let us know when you find it.

Does it quit making the noise if you raise the RPM's up a bit?
I'm going with the bearing in the Alt/PS/WP drive belt tensioner pulley.
