99 740iL - Replace rear deck speakers
I have searched the blogs, YouTube, and the Net and I can not find out how to replace the rear deck speakers on my 1999 740IL (e38). The OEM are poor quality to begin with and i just want to replace the dried out and blown out speakers with something that works. I can easily pop off the cover grill and I can remove the four screws that appear to secure the speaker but I can not get them out. Should I use force? I have seen videos that show that rear deck speakers can be released from below in the trunk compartment but I have inspected this and it does not seem to be the case. Are they just stuck after all these years? Do they pop out with some prying? I have found e39 videos that require the entire removal of the back seats to get to the rear deck and this doesn't seem necessary. Has anyone tackled this problem and can you provide me some suggestions? Thank you in advance for any guidance.

Hi there,
My Software says that you only need to unclip and remove the loudspeaker finisher, and step 2: Unfasten screws, lift up loudspeaker and remove connector. Apparently they are 8 screws for 2 speakers on each side. There is no mention about removing the seats or anything else for rear shelf loud speaker 99 740IL. Good Luck. Hope it works... they must be stuck from the Sun ... |

The rear deack speakers are removable. It could be tight and snug from being in that poistion for a long time. After you remove the screws you may have to use a little force to pop them out. I have replaced mine. That was job #1 for me.

Joyism5!!! I just finished. You were exactly right. Popping off the grill and removing the screws was never a problem. They were just stuck and I was afraid to work them free with a flat head. I guess 12 years in direct sun from South Florida took its toll on them. I worked them free and replaced them easily. I appreciate your input. I just needed a bit more confidence that I would not break the deck as I was not sure how much pressure it would take.
Great and useful forum. Obviously great members! Thanks, Joyism5. |

Glad 4 you! After I read your post I said to check my speakers since I know they sound bad...They are really shot!.I had a bit of resistance when i take it down and I know that car has been sitting in the South Carolina's sun for several years without start. These pic. from my 99 740IL.
BTW. How much you paid for them? What brand? Satisfied how they sound? Last edited by joyism5; 01-09-2011 at 01:21 PM. |

Bavarian Sound Werks
These were suggested in a blog. Apparently, you have to be careful not to get ones without the correct impedance as they will not work with the "system" already in the car.

Hello,
I clicked on your linked to see what speakers you replaced with. This question may have been answered so I apologize in advance. The speakers on the link look like mid range speakers. Is that truly the case as I would think it would have been more like a small sub instead. Also what other brands would work beside the ones at Bavarian? Has any tested other brands and found them superior to Bavarian? I am in the same boat and looks like I will have to replace my rear speakers along with the entire speaker system in my 01 740iL. I plan on getting the Dice Duo but after I add everything up...it's quite expensive.

Was this view from the top of the rear section?

Yes the view was from the top of the rear section. I was since able to take out the speakers on one side. The speakers were missing the rubber or plastic surround that bonds the speaker to the frame. I found a place out of Florida that will recone them but I am not sure this would be worth it.

No pictures just yet. Still doing research on the type of speakers I would like to drop in. I am still a bit confused on the ohms as the local place here put a tester on it it reads 6.5 ohms. I just wondered if it was truly 6.5 or if they are 8 ohms and because there are two speakers per side, that's cuts the ohms down. Anyone have any ideas on this???

I had some speakers repaired - the rubber part was termed 'suspension ring' by the repairer. I was told that the best rings are made in India - not because of 'India Rubber' but because the by-products of manufacture are so foul that no other country is interested in allowing their manufacture. Just a side note.............

Is there any reason these speakers would not work to replace the deck speakers in a 1998 740il? |

IMpeedance has to be the same even if they are a physical fit.. That data is usually on the magnet part of the speaker.

can anyone tell me if they are a left/right config or are on a separate channel(like mono) solely for low frequencies . I have 4 PPI 6.5's that I can install bridged to 8ohm( 2 per side).
Also what the actual amp rating of the DSP system is? I have been looking on the net & cannot find that info. Check out this site & can anyone tell me how the factory wiring is? I see they are 8 ohm speakers, but are they all connected down to 2 ohm or are they wired for 8? http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/wo...4&I=81#results (mono/single channel) 4 speakers wired ![]() ![]() Left/right) 2 8 ohm speakers to a 4ohm load) per side?
