Replacement Blower Motor Options

Blower motor is making a high pitch sound when cold (and cold up here is really cold !!!, around -18 Celsius , so around 0 Fahrenheit)
i can also hear the blower (squirrel cage) hitting the housing around it, which i think confirms that the bearing is shot....

a detailed write up is @ http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...=418987&page=3 (page 3 i find has more pics and a little more details)

but according to (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...+motor+bearing look for User (NoMercy346) )

it seems like the BMW X3 blower can fit into the E46...(E46 blower $540 plus shipping, while X3 blower is somewhere around 120 plus shipping) ..... But can anyone confirm this??

Even though they don't have an exact match, contact them and inquire. They have a huge inventory not on eBay.

I've made several purchases from them and have always been pleased with the experience. I have a rear diff in my car from them and it's going strong!

Mine did the same thing until I took apart the cowl and sprayed copious amounts of aerosol lithium grease on the motor shaft bearings. It should buy you another year or two before having to spend the time and money to replace it.

Doesn't look like those bearings are possible to change?

I'll have a go at it this weekend (get to the blower motor and spray lubricant to buy some time, even though i highly doubt it would hold for a month, just because of the temperature variation that the bearing has to endure)

Is there such a thing as a replacement bearing for this application ??

I'm guessing that the bearing would wear faster than the blower motors main shaft.... any ideas?

what about the X3 blower fitting the E46.. any experience ??

you must be insane (or really rich) to buy an original blower for the E46 : http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330...wer/ES2165890/

Versus an original BMW blower motor (for an X3) : http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E83-X3-...ower/ES256098/

IMO, if you're going to remove it and doctor it up, why not just buy a used one for under $100?

NoMercy346's claim that the X3 part number comes up as interchangeable with the E46 is not correct based on my search.

Thanks for the response, it's really helpful, i just want to get to the bottom of it (comparison between X3 and E46 blower motor) before i make a decision, I would rather buy the X3 blower motor if it directly fits, otherwise, i'd definitely consider getting a used one from eBay (thanks for the links)

Jvr826 , please correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm confused as to the Cross reference link that you posted, if you check the following links, it'll point to a 330i E46 with the part number listed being the same as the BMW X3 blower motor part number

X3 part number : 64113453729

E46 part number : 64118372797

E46 330i : http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...=64&fg=40&hl=2

X3 : http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...=64&fg=40&hl=1

Unless there is a glitch in the Realoem Site

I was flabbergasted as to how effective the spray lube worked. It seems as though the issue is that the bearings just get a little dry but aren't significantly worn.

IIRC, (this was two years ago) the bearings are not serviceable. They looked to be oil impregnated bronze bushings that are pressed into the motor housing. The housing isn't able to be disassembled.

Also, personally, I wouldn't order the blower unless I was 100% certain that it was the correct part. Often times vendors do not accept returns on electrical parts.

after a little more searching, here is what i found (all based on a search and cross reference search at realoem , so if the website is wrong, then this theory is definitely wrong as well)

BMW X3 : USA & Europe have the same part number (64113453729)

E46 (all except 330xi): USA part number is (64118372797) while the Europe Part number is (64113453729) which is the same as the X3

now here is the funny part.... E46 (the 330xi in specific) has listed the part number as (64113453729), which is the expensive USA part

any ideas ??? i'm really confused, why only the 330xi ... and why the difference in part numbers... ???

When you settle on a part number, use www.furiousmethod.com to shop for the best price.

Would be good if anyone had chance to get both of those in hand and look at them well.

Might be that both fit, or might not... but they're expensive parts so should know for sure before ordering.

Update about the part numbers.....

the above is correct, some people have done it (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...=418987&page=8, actually, check page 3 an up, and you will notice that the replacement part in the pictures of page 3 (Write up) is in fact the cheaper BMW X3 blower motor ( 64113453729 , or what they reference as 64-11-3-453-729 ) )

so i'll probably try my luck with some Teflon base PTFE Synthetic Grease, and order a new fan (the cheaper one)

Yes, I'm one of the guys who have successfully done it. The X3 blower motor works and works well, just make sure they give you the new saddle otherwise it won't fit. The saddle is supplied in the box, just make sure it's in there and nobody has removed it. My notes are here :
