Low coolant warning, BMW dealers all closed, what to do?
My coolant warning came on and the reserve is empty. Can I add distilled water or some other coolant in the meantime? BMW dealer is about 30 miles away so I'll need to do something to the car to the dealer anyway...

I would not add water in there, it might freeze up. You should try to drive to the dealer. If your car throws a high coolant temp warning on the way there, you should shut off the car immediately and get it tow there. Good Luck.

Check your manual for the correct response. You should be able to add coolant. Usually, coolant needs to be diluted with regular water.

It this is from a gradual loss of coolant over many months and there is no temperature warning than you should be able to drive it for a while, certainly until you can take it to the dealer. If there has been a rapid loss of coolant then there would be a temperature warning and of course you must shut it down immediately.
Most coolants are meant to be mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Adding a pint or so of distilled water wouldn't hurt if you add an equal amount of coolant later as soon as possible. |

If you are near Canton I have some BMW premixed coolant you can use. If not, I'd just go to the dealer tomorrow when they open and have them top it off.

OP if you've got someone that can give you a lift leave your car in the dealer lot overnight and call them up in the morning. |
