Z4 Roadster: Wife wants one (yay)! Some questions.

So the wife wants a Z4 Roadster, budget is $15-$20K, 2006/2007 model year most likely based on local prices (SoCal). She'll be getting the "slow one" as she says, 3.0i.

I'm looking at 2006 as the base due to the engine and other updates that happened in 2006, looking for confirmation if that is big enough deal to cut off at that point.

I'd appreciate any advice about things to watch out for, to check/have checked, etc.

She's been doing the mini-van dance for about 20 years, and is so excited.

Thanks for your help.

On the Z4 M they added an AUX input for 2007, not on the 2006, probably the same with the 3.0i. This would allow her to plug in an MP3 player for more music choices. You could also buy the AUX cable and install it yourself on a 2006 if you feel handy about pulling out the radio and working with the radio harness.

You can snag a 2007 3.0si without the sports package for your budget. More powerful engine but same comfort. Post July 2006 build to avoid sticky steering.

Thanks, good points. I added the aux connector to my 530i, so hopefully it will be as easy on the Z4 if we get one w/out it. Test drove a couple 2007 models today, 3.0si w/stick, and 3.0i w/auto. The si w/the stick was a blast, but wife has confirmed she wants an auto so we won't be going there unfortunately. Oh well, her car, her choice.

The si comes in auto too. I almost leased an automatic si in 08. It was surprisingly quick. I would keep looking until an si pops up in your price range. Don't settle. As another suggested- go for an 07 as well to avoid some issues.

BruceM has a 07 Si with paddle shifters. Sharp car in the Hell Rot Red color. He loves the car and if I had not gone to the dark side I might have went with the SI.

The 04 3.0 I had came with a Steptronic trans and it was pretty sporty and pretty much bullet proof.

Best of luck.

Actually I think it is post June 2006. As I recall the change was made beginning with the July 2006 build. But double check me on that.

And I concur with those above, get the si.

Things are getting more complicated!

Talked w/the wife and we have added the coupe version to consideration due to her concerns about noise level in the ragtop on longer drives. Still trying to get her to actually drive one! Way too busy at work this week, but on the weekend I should finally be able to get her butt in a seat so she can see/feel/smell/hear what it's like.

With all due respect to my coupe brethren, you must go with the roadster. You live in SoCal.

I have an '08 3.0si roadster in Bright Red (Hellrot), automatic with paddles and I can tell you it is an absolute blast to drive. On long trips, with the top up, there is surprisingly little noise as the fabric and bows keep the top taut, unlike the old days when convertibles meant a lot of flapping in the roof. There is a lot of room for luggage, surprisingly so. We take long trips regularly in this car, most with overnight stays of several days, carry separate bags for the both of us as well as food, water, munchies etc to keep boredom at bay. The car rolls on run flats which are noisy but not overly so....have a little over 40K on the odometer, purchased at Thanksgiving back in 2011...dealer maintained and warranted until 2016. The wife likes to drive the car as well because it is so responsive but she does not drive it other than when we are on trips as she has a Camry of her own. No dimples, no dings, just a beautiful, fun-to-drive car.

If you go with a coupe your choices are more limited as they only came in 255hp si trim. This is good in that you will get a better performing car vs the 3.0i roadster.

It is very hard to test-drive cars on paper Best thing is have her test at least a couple of cars first, go back home for more research/reflection and then go for that big test/purchase day.

I was surprised to find that I did not like the Z4's manual box and that the auto works very well.

I'm just drooling the more I think about it.

Wifey has swung back to the convertible side of things at this point, and later today after we drop my son off at the airport we are finally going to get her into a Z4 test drive! She also wants to look at some 3-series convertibles as well, so we're going to take a spin in one of those as well. She says a friend has an '03 328 or 330 (not sure which) that is going to take her out for a drive today or tomorrow.

We were watching a show last night that had a Z8 in it...she was enthralled by it, and said "Oh, that Z4 really looks like fun - I like that!" i didn't correct her, since she was really just commenting on how fun it looked to zoom about w/the top down. We'll see how reality goes - she has long hair and will have to figure out an easy/quick way to keep it under control when the top is down. Or maybe I should buy her a Z8 and and tell the kids that they we decided that they really don't need to go to college.

Onward!

By the way, curious, how old are you guys? We've just passed the mid-century mark and kids are mostly away at schoold and/or entertaining themselves so a two-seater is finally a reasonable idea for us.

Yes- that option is available on all Z4's 06 and up. You can also have the doors auto lock at 5mph. Just has to be programed.

As for age- just turned 44, but I have had my car since I was 41.

For the wife's long hair you must get a windscreen/windblocker. My wife loves the Z4. But she loved it more after I bought a windscreen. Numerous types out there. As you might guess BMW OEM is most expensive. I have: http://www.roadstersolutions.com/page69.html
And can highly recommend it.

We are mid-50's. But we got the Z4 as a 3rd car, not a DD. We bought ourselves motorcyles for our 40th birthdays, but eventually thought that was not a safe play. Now we have the Z4. And yes, empty nesters. But now we have a grandchild. The circle of life.

If only there was a way to get the Z4 with the sound of the 330i. Absolutely love the way that car sounds. Good Luck!

I'll add that I had an 05 3.0, which was essentially the Si model pre 06 (different engine). If you go with this car sans sports package, you'll get a good ride, enough power (225hp) and a reliable ride at a good price.

Z4's, as mentioned, are good touring cars, they're quiet enough, taut enough and feel safe on the road.

Enjoy.

Thanks again for the info/feedback.

It looks like my Z4 dreams are going to be crushed by an '05 330Cic convertible. She drove one today and pretty much fell in love. The good news is that I was able to lead her away from an Audi A4 convertible that was nice but not very much fun. The 330Cic is FUN!

We still have one son at home w/his car so already a three-car family and wife put her foot down at my (to me very reasonable) suggestion that we get the Z4 as our fun/weekend car. Maybe when we finally get the last son and his car out the door I'll be able to talk her into it.

Thanks, and I guess I'll be moping around over in the E46 forum. Nice folks here, though, thanks for the help.

Wife drove the Z4, and I knew it wasn't going to happen when she turned to put her purse and jacket into the back seat, and suddenly realized there was no back seat. ;-) You can show people a lot of pictures, but until they get into the car, it just isn't real. She loved the car and how it drove, but just has to have more space in the cabin for her "stuff."

So Saturday she picked up an '05 330Ci w/37K miles on it - really great shape, Sport/Premium packages, new Continental ContiSportContac 3 tires, and she loves the color (I think it's called silver-grey? It's lighter than the sterling grey on my 530i, but darker than the regular silver). Silver interior - her only concern was that she didn't want a black interior, so she's fine w/the interior color.

She is thrilled (should say THRILLED) and about as happy as you'd expect after 20-odd years of driving minivans.

I, however, have been somewhat bitten by the Z4 bug, and spend idle time browsing Z4 pictures (wife calls it Z4 porn) on the internet.
