I would buy an F31 diesel touring w/xDrive and a stick in a heartbeat, if they'd sell it here Oh well, BMW's saving me money, I guess.

A casual drive on the freeway today at 60mph for 30 miles yielded 46.5mpg from the trip computer. The gas gauge needle barely moved. I like!

It is relatively flat, although the 55-60mph probably helped quite a bit.

I average more than 40 mpg on my trips back and forth between NJ and NH, typically in Comfort mode. Speeds are between 65-75 mph, although my speed alarm is set for 86 mph and occasionally goes off. One of these trips, I'll have to try keeping the speed to 65 mph and really concentrate on maximizing economy. I just haven't had the patience to do it yet.

I've been very impressed with the 8-Speed 328i so far. I thought I would really miss my E39 540i/6, but I don't.

Don't trust your trip computer!!

Mine is 10% high-535i. My sister's is 10% high-328i.

So trip computer says 40mpg really 36mpg. You have to compute when you fill up to know the real story!

My 328i trip MPG gauge seems pretty acurate. My last fill up I showed 399 miles on the trip meter with the gauge showing 30.0 MPG, I added 13.35 gallons (399/13.35 = 29.9 MPG). that is less than a 1% error (not counting the fill up error). My fill up prior to that was equally close. I had owned an Acura before and it always read about 0.5 MPG high (it showed 26 and I would have 25.5).

My 30.0 reading was for my daily commute in comfort mode (70% freeway / 30% primary roads during prime traffic hours in Detroit and included various local drives to store, gym, etc.). My best reading was a recent trip to the Kalamazoo and back where I achived 36 MPG (65-72 MPH) in ecopro mode.

I trust the computer more than paper and pencil calculations based on an assumed full tank. Unless you can fill your tank up to the same level every time you can't really calculate mpg accurately on one tank. It would be accurate if you averaged over 3 or more tanks, though.

On my Camry I've hand calculated the mpg and concluded that the on-board computer is good enough. And it should be since they know how much fuel is metered in during operation and how many miles are travelled.

Recent trip from Long Beach to Santa Barbara, 108 miles pretty much all freeway (I405 then US101) gave me 37.5mpg. This was in eco pro mode, occasional medium traffic but mostly light traffic and roughly 70mph +/-. The engine is still breaking in, I'm just under 4K miles on it. Expect it to loosen up and give even better mileage later on.
